New Years greetings to all!

The Purple Martini has a wheel howl! We are submitting our information here in hopes of sage advise.

Symptoms: Wheel noise when rolling that quiets down upon steering changes.

Response so far: purchase new bearings and attempt removal and install of new bearings.

Problem: now that the wheel and brakes and transaxle are disassembled we are having a heck of a time getting the splined axle out of the original mounting. All of this makes us consider if perhaps the original howling was the result of a poorly adjusted/tightened crown nut on the axle our insufficient lubrication in the first place. The general area is coated with a fine dust of a rust coloration that might indicate that lubrication and proper tightening of the crown nut was the main problem.

Is there an easy way to remove the splined wheel post? As long as we are in there we will renew the bearings and then reassemble with appropriate amounts of lubrication.

If anyone here has any words of wisdom (or pity) we hope you will share your advise and expertise.

there is just abit of corrosion in there, take a 2x4 and hold over the end of the shaft so as not to damage the threads and get a 20lb sledge hammer and give it a couple of whacks it will come out.

I see you're wearing the correct safety footwear for that sort of job.

Use a big 2 legged puller or if you're going to hit it, take the trailing arm out and support it from behind or you'll be shocking the suspension.

I beat the H*** out of the spline and no movement. Then I checked for in-out, left right, up down movement and decided to reassemble with a boat load of grease on the CV joint and spline.

the noise is diminished yet not gone. i will post a UTUBE link for your listening and diagnostic pleasure. i hope someone will have some advise for us.

the BFH did not budge the spindle!

Well then I'd say its either cooked or rusted in and it should not be back on the road till fixed.
The short shaft comes out but needs more force.
This is what is supposed to come off

I've never had a hard time getting them out - just a little work with a hammer, but then mine might be a little worn...

The circlip just holds the rear bearing in from what I remember.

I've used the piece of wood between the shaft and a hammer with success. You just need a little more oomph Or a pick up a big gear puller from your local auto parts tool exchange program. Around me, both Autozone and Advanced Auto have them.

Hmm, mine both slid out like they had bearing grease all over them, must be the low mileage on the car.
