I was gonna go to Calgary today to look at some cars, but I only reached one person, and I didn't feel like driving 400km round trip for one car. So I stayed home and looked on the Internet to see if there was a new car, and I found a BMW in Edmonton. I went right away to look at it and it was better than I thought. It's a 1990 535I. 210hp, 5 spd. It's dark blue and has all black leather interior and even heated seats. It's awaesome. I'm picking it up tomorrow morning so I'll post some pics after work!

NO! I'll keep working on it, but at least I can rent a shop space or something now and get there, too, to finish it.

Opps, sorry, just slipped out.

Enjoy the car, Jens. Any old car is a money pit, really.

Yeah, but the 924 is a wishing fountain that you throw pennies into...

A new-old Bimmer can disappear cash like an Enron executive

(Nice car, though, JB 924)

The car wasn't all to expensive, so I don't expect it to be perfect, but I drove it home today, 120km, and without any problems. I have probably spent aroud $4k on the 924, and driven it less than 10km, and died almost every time.

So here are some pictures I promised.

The Engine Bay is very clean, even if it doesn't look like it in the pic.

I love the red Dash Display. I'll see if I can get one where only the numbers light up red, because now it's kind of everything.

I'll get rear taillifghts that are red on the bottom, and white on top, instead of orange.

If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll do an alignment and set the valve clearances. Next week I'll do an oil change, change sparplugs, change the differential oil, set the timing, etc. I must say, after driving the AWD Minivan for so long, this thing's got some balls! And the rear wheel drive helps in the corners.

There are only 4 things wrong with the car so far:

Permanent high beams don't work (99% sure it's the fuse)
Cam cover gasket leaks
Surface rust
Driver's side door lock is broken

None of these are major so I'm not worried yet. (Knock on wood)

I won't ditch the 924, if anything I'll be spending more time on it because I have a way of getting to a garage. So see you all later.

Jens

What Paul means is be careful! Look it over very well with a mechanic who knows these cars on a hoist for an hour solid. After that stake your claim.

Cam cover gasket as in a cover plate gasket? That's only a few bucks.
A fuse perhaps? Just a few bucks.
Surface rust could be a wack of cash depending on how far you want to go and how far along the rust is.
Door lock broken? Parts yards, online car breakers, used forums, local parts cars in papers, just calling a deal for a laugh.

I'm sure you checked the car over very well and I think you can keep up on the service needed. Lots of fun ahead, that's for sure. Just remember she's getting older, take care and caution.

Older 5 series Bimmers look the best. You car will be murder on gas though. As I recall your motor was the biggest in fuel useage that BMW ever made for a road going car. While that's a drawback it can haul ass with much "faster" cars.

I have an older one as well, they hold up well as long as you have a sense of the car and how well the car has been taken care of in its lifetime.

Actually, gas consumption isn't too bad. I got around 12-13 litres per 100km in the city, and around 8.5-11.5 on the highway, depending on slightly uphill or downhill. At least that's what the gauge says. Compared to most other people I know who drive 13mpg trucks, I'm happy!

Also, from all I've read, heard, or talked about with other people, the 3.5 engines are bulletproof and I know of lots of them with 200k miles -350k miles on the stock motor. The car also had a few major things done to it like front brakes, clutch not too long ago, etc. Shocks are fine, and the suspension is solid.

Yeah yeah all good my man, that's all very important. And yes the motors are very very strong as long as they have been taken care of. And motor will grenade if abused and not maintained. I have a friend who has an 89 e34 and that thing gets hammered all of the time, still runs very well and no major issues at all. I think it has 280,000 on the clock and has been ramped up by way of bolt-ons, chip, intake, electronic gagets etc. Still a reliable car.

I love my car and I hope you love yours for a long time too.

Here's an online album of my 540:
