An FYI, I found a replacement for my coolant expansion tank cap last night (what some might incorrectly call a radiator cap). This is the screw-on type, not the push in and 1/4 turn style used on the 2.0L NA and the 2.5L cars, as common on many VW's.

The original P/N is 171.121.321. Replacement part listed in the parts manual is 171.121.321D.

The part I got that looks the same, except it's blue, is 443.121.321. Again, obviously, as you'd expect, it appears to be a pretty standard VW part...

Hopefully now my system will hold pressure and stop dumping coolant all over the place once the temp gets above the 3/4 mark... very embarrasing at the dealer...

I just replaced my old expansion tank & cap with Porsche-supplied parts (couldn't even see coolant through the 'browned' old plastic!). Was surprised to see the blue cap too:

Actually the cap has a 996.106.447.01 no. & a different pressure relief design underneath.

One thing on exp tank too - look carefully in photo & you'll see that main outlet port on new tank is different length & angle than original

Same part no. as original too - strange. Had to adjust hose to make it fit.

I'll bet that makes the engine compartment look 10 times better!

It did until I went out for my maiden voyage after fitting it!

I also replaced a couple of w/pump hoses (the tstat one had been weeping for some time I suspect):

Now I've realised (looking at other threads) that my head gasket must have gone - my new expansion tank was blown up like a balloon after a 30 mile cruise on the highway

Now that my cooling system is airtight its highlighted the 'real' problem behind my string of hose failures
