Gearbox origin?

We all (I guess) know that the engine block origins from the Audi 100 and VW LT.

But wich Audi/VW car does the "Audi" gearboxes origin from?

I have searched but the closest I find is "gearbox of Audi origin".

But I want to know more.... please enlighten me

audi 5000, and the audi fox appear to be close.

and probably most later model front-wheel drive Audis with the motor mounted north-south as well. Some Audis came with a 6-speed transaxle that might be cheaper than the 6-speed 968.

Are you saying that an Audi 6-speed gerbox would fit in 924?

That would be very interessting. Tell me more...

looks like you might have to remove the spare tire well for enough room, and would have to look at it first to verify that the bellhousing pattern is the same.

It would be nice. I know the 968 bellhousing is different and won't mate up to the 5-spd torque tube. Something tells me that the other Audi 6-spds are probably the same pattern as the 968. For the 968 conversion, I believe you have to use the 968 fuel tank too. Not sure if you have to dip into the spare wheel well. This stuff should be documented over on rennlist.

I've found an audi 6-speed gearbox on ebay.de with 3 pics. One of them was the front of the bell housing. Ecxept for three holes, all things are ok ( design, holes, concept, etc... )

the side : there is different holes for gearbox mounts but it's not really a problem, and connection to shift lever is the same as our audi type gearbox.

the size : it is only few centimeters longer but the car has room to accept it.

You could adapt the Audi bellhousing to the 924 torque tube bellhousing, if you were willing to do the work, but would the axles still fit without modification? Is the transmission only longer in the back, or are the axle "connections" on the transmission more to the rear, too? Cool idea, though.
