|
|
I finally installed the 16mm rear sway bar I got from Vince a few months back (thanks Vince). Installation went smoothly. I was debating whether or not to buy the Weltmeister mounting kit for cars that didn't come with a rear sway bar from the factory. I just couldn't justify the $200 price for the mounting kit.
Instead, I bought a pair of very heavy duty 3.5 inch guillotine clamps, total cost around $5. I then bought some M10 10.8 hardness bolts, again around $5. The edges of the heads on the M10 bolts were shaved down a bit with a grinder so they would fit through the bracket of the guillotine clamps, and into the holes I drilled to match up to the stock sway bar brackets. I had to grind down the lower corner of the bracket on the guillotine clamps as well so the emergency brake cable would comfortably fit around it.
Got out for a nice 2 hour drive this afternoon, the car felt great. I wasn't sure if I would notice the difference, but I was able to hit some empty highway on-ramps at good speeds, and the car definitely feels flatter.
Here is the result:

Yes, I stole the idea from a dog who hangs out here in a plaid shirt. Maybe you know him? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Something I'd noticed and wasn't going to bother you with it, but I just realized there's an easy way to correct it.. See the angle of the end of the bar to the end link - the bar would function better if that angle were closer to 90 degrees. As it is in the picture, the bar would be pulled away from the torsion tube in addition to it's normal twisting motion (it wouldn't literally be pulled away - it's obviously securely attached, but the force exerted on the bar due to the angle of the end links would be fore-aft in addition to the twist). Easy correction - rotate the guillotine clamps down some. I think the Weltmeister instructions have you setting them at about a 45 degree angle. By rotating them down, the bar ends will be oriented closer to horizontal and the end links will be at at least a closer to 90* angle than they are now. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Smoothie, thanks for the tip, much appreciated. That's part of the reason I post pics here, just in case someone notices a mistake I've made. Definitely an easy solution, getting everything in there was the hard part, loosening a few bolts to turn the clamps won't be so hard. What the picture doesn't show well is the very minimal clearance between the bar and the exhaust, in the picture it looks like there is more clearance than there actually is, that was definitely the limiting factor when I was setting the placement of the clamps. I may still have a touch of room above the exhaust to be able to turn the clamps down a bit. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Well, one other possibility if you run out of guillotine rotating room - attach the end links at the toe adjustment holes where you now have the plastic ties. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Care to make that make sense?
Chrenan - What I'm fussing about is just about optimizing the thing with a little common sense physics. How much real world difference it will make - I don't know.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Interesting idea. I wonder did Lizard have more to say on the issue, since his post ended with a comma maybe he hit the submit button too soon.
Hopefully I will have some room to rotate. If the setup is left as is, will I damage or destroy anything? I don't pretend to be a suspension expert, and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn last night. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Chrenan - there is very little room between the bar and the exhaust on the stock setup, so you can inch it pretty close. I also don't think that the angle is 90* between the droplink and the bar in the stock setup either. Although, it maybe a little closer to it than yours is now.
Anyway, glad to see you were able to avoid Weltmeister's ill-fitting kit. Yours looks much better to boot. _________________ 1980 931S

Thanks for the comments guys. Almost everyone that has weighed in here has an animal as their avatar, pretty funny.
I am pretty sure I have the stock exhaust system (2 1/4?). I'm a little embarassed at how rusty it is, especially now that it is plastered on the internet, but there are no holes, I swear.
Good to know the stock setup is tight, I might be able to sneak things a little closer with peace of mind.
I can't understand how Weltmeister can charge so much for their kit. I couldn't see anything that made it that special, and their other products aren't crazy expensive. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
