Hey guys,

If you have read some of my posts, you may be aware my car has some oil leaks/burns oil. Well, I have noticed that I have a noticeable pool of oil sitting in the low spots of the intake manifold...how would it get there? Is this a serious problem? I am planning on rebuilding the head this winter to fix the oil burning problem, would that probably cure the oil pooling problem?

Ryan

Dunno what your crankcase ventiliation system's like, but most oil in the airbox is put there by blowby. It's getting past your rings and blown into the intake tract. Porsche says not to worry too much about it unless things are very wet. Lots of guys here know more about how much is acceptable than I do, but I understand most of these cars have oil, at least some, in their airboxes.

My old air filter was soaked in oil, good to know it's normal. (The last owner didn't take very good caree of the car)

When the oil pressure in my crankhouse began coming out of the dipstick hole and filling the air filter house, and there was also a pool of oil sitting in the low spots of the intake manifold.....

I had to do this:

I swapped with a better engine...

Totally. A little oil in the airbox isn't a real big deal. I'm willing to bet that all of us have at least a little in ours. However, I think that Ryan was talking about having oil pooling on top of the manifold (ie: visible by simply opening the hood and looking in).. rather than inside the intake system. And, if that's the case... I'm useless. haha. I can't explain where it's coming from. Buuuut, I'm still pretty much a novice, so I'm sure that one of the more seasoned gearheads can come up with something.

I would suspect that if it's on the outside of the intake, it's probably leaking from inside the intake (in my experience) - leaking out of the rubber boots. Indicates you may have a leaking or loose rubber boot, but also yes, at a certain point it's time for new rings.

Maybe you should plan a full rebuild this winter. Simply swapping in new rings and bearings can be done without machining work, if you do it before any damage occurs (meaning rebuilding due to age, not due to failure, not that you're likely to kill the motor before then).

Wow, NikDev, those are definitely some sweet fender covers. What brand? And you make swapping the engine look easier than changing spark plugs.

Has no one suggested the valve cover gasket? tip - use a 3/8" torque wrench to torque the cover nuts evenly and you'll never never have a leak.

Those fender covers look like flannel blanket + scissors + duct tape to me

hmm,

I will try torquing the camshaft cover. Now that I think of it, there is a nut that looked replaced, maybe it is loose.

Nick's right. That'll teach me to post at 3:00 in the morning. I read low spots as being low spot in the airbox.

Hope you get the leak sorted!

I'm not sure that's "normal". You may have a plugged crankcase vent. Or so much blowby it's blowing oil into your airbox. Some oil film is normal but not a soaked air filter.

Yes its done in a hour...

But its oil in the low spots of the intake manifold because its oil in the air box... The oil gets sucked from the airbox and into the the intake manifold, and it leaks down to the "low spots". You will probably have a lot of oil in your intake hoses..
