yeah my dad drove it to the paint shop the other day and i was behind him in the truck. he said the brakes were very much lacking and he was afraid the whole drive there. he says if you pump them up a few times, that the pedal gets stiffer, but if you dont it just goes to the floor and its not very good at stopping. we bled the brakes and we seemed to do a good job, but then again i dont think air in the lines would "pump up" and get stiff again. got any idea whats wrong or what i need to fix/replace?

thanks.

oh by the way, on the way to the paint shop, i was behind my dad in the truck. i look at the back left wheel and it is wobbling like its gonna fall off any second. my dad pulled over and we took a look at it and saw there was one lug remaining. before we left we torqued the lugs with the air wrench, i dont see how they came loose, but they did. anyway, we took one lug from 2 other wheels so we had 3 lugs on 3 of the wheels. it was quite a confusing and scary adventure. if that wheel would have fallen off, i would have cried. alot.

never tighten wheel lugs with an impact gun, ALWAYS do it by hand,

as per the brakes lacking, you need to adjust the rear drum brakes and confirm that there is no air in the system

not much would have happened if a rear wheel would have fallen off, as you would have just scrubbed the lower shock and mounting point

Check the brake fluid? Those are the same symptoms I had when my white car(not 924) had a leak in the brake line.

BTDT!

Lost a rear wheel (disappeared into the bush) after not tightening the wheel bolts properly. The lower shock mount got a good rubbing down, but that was the extent of the damage (other than the verbal abuse I copped from the wife as I had 2 of the kids with me at the time).

lol I know 2 others 924 owners it has happened to, and it is ALWAYS the rear rims,
I almost had it happen to my 924 once, but I knew something wasnt right as soon as two had backed off, got out and checked sure enough two were way to loose, but I know I had tightened them 2 days before, I didnt really think much of it

You know, I'm pretty sure there is even a torque spec for the lug nuts/bolts

Wait, wait, here it comes: for lug bolts, 94ft-lbs for alloy wheels, 80 ft-lbs for steel wheels

Interesting. Mandy's rear lug bolts need to be checked regularly. They tend to back out. And I've been going to 80ft/lbs. Design thing?

Gary, I don't think your brake problem is as simple as air in the lines. I think you need to have a good look at you master cylinder and your servo (booster) cylinder. If there's brake fluid in the booster, it's a M/C overhaul job for you.

And BTW, the brakes are good when they're working properly!

Well, here's my confession...near side front wheel came off on my 924. Felt something was wrong and stopped in the dark and looked at it. Couldn't see a thing and the tyre was a bit flat so drove it a couple of miles to the nearest petrol station. As I was crossing the road to turn into the petrol station the wheel came off and rolled down the road. Oops. Damn lucky I was only doing about 3 miles an hour! Front wing folded up and the brake dic backing plate bent. That was years ago and I've never forgetten to re-check any bolt after that.

I recently replaced the rear wheel cylinders - so if your brakes are still going and you haven't check that, I'd have a look there.

i just got a huge load of random, useful parts (thanks deisel) and included in that pile was a master cylinder (the plastic peice and the metal thing under it, and the brake booster). Should i just replace that? is it easier than fixing it?

EDIT: i forgot to add, a few months ago, i replaced the rear cylinders, all new pads/shoes, all new hoses, all new rear hardware, and had both rotors turned and both drums turned.

How far did you go getting the discs turned down?

There is a minmum thickness spec on them (can't remember what it is).
