I know that swaping 944 body panels onto a 924 is possible. Is basicly body panels, interior, & motor the only thing separating the 944 and the 924? Seeing that I am aware of the body panels, my main intrest is on the drive train, brakes, and motor. Are 944 trannys able to go into a 924? Is the 944 engine block the same as a 924? Reason for asking is can you put a 944 head on a 924? I always thought the 924 had all disc brakes. Now I have found out that some of the old ones have rear drum. Can 944 rear disk brakes be put on a 924? Any extra info on what the differences are between the to would be great!

Engine - no. Not without serious work to the crossmember / engine mounts. The 2.5L engine is completely different than the 2.0L. Not to mention the difference between engine management - CIS vs. Motronic

Transmission - sorta. Torque tube is also required, as is the BroncoII/whatever clutch to mate the different sized spline

Interior - sorta. pre-85.5 944 interiors are similar in most respects

Brakes - yes. Takes some work, search on this topic for lots of info. You have to swap front & rear at the same time.

Body panels - sorta. Front fenders are a bolt on. Rear fenders are welded. Front valence could take some work. Doors/hatch/bumpers are the same - for non S/Turbo/etc. models.

The 924/944 series has had lots of changes through the years with suspension parts. Many of the changes are subtle.

Torque tube? I dunno' what a torque tube is. I see here that the clutch is connected to the driveshaft that goes to the tranny.

You just cant swap out the rear tranny?... BroncoII, you mean there is something from a Bronco that will fit on a 924?

As for the motor... Fuel delivery/management or anything FI is nothing for me to worry about. I am refering to the cylinder heads only, fuel management need not mention. Reason for saying is that usually when a manufacture puts an I4 in 2 to 3 sepperate cars the same year, it is the same I4. Just maby with different pistons or heads or FI. You sure it ain't the same block?

TY for the brake info. I will search for it.

924 : Audi Block / Porsche Head - 2.0 litre
931 : Audi Block / Different Porsche Head + Turbo - 2.0 litre
944 : Porsche Block / Porsche Head - 2.5 to 3.0 litres (In basic terms, half of a 928 V8 )
924S : 944 Engine - 2.5 litres

I have found more info on this stuff. Found out like you said the 944 motor is different, but it did go in a 924S which is what made me think they must be the same/similar. (Still suprised to hear it is that much different)

As for the transmition... By torque tube do you mean drive shaft? After looking more at the diagram and reading what you said. You basicly would have to replace the main part of the drive train from the clutch back. But would need a BroncoII clutch?

My reason for these questions is that I was thinking about getting a 924 & a 944 and upgrading the 924 with all that I could from a 944. Or I thought I could possibly transplant a 924 motor in a 944. But I would only want to do that if I didnt get a 924 with a 5 speed tranny.

the torque tube is the piece which mates the engine/clutch assembly to the tranny.

Really...

This is 924 one-oh-one. Not that we mind answering any specific detail questions you're having problems with... but it's good advice to read up the FAQ and Tech. sections before asking these sort of questions.

Good luck on your quest for knowledge, though. And welcome to The 'Board.

Yes, and we've answered your questions haven't we? We were merely pointing out that there is a bunch of the same information available in the FAQ so that you could have saved yourself sometime and just read those before posting on the board so that you could have asked us about things that aren't in the FAQ so that its likely to be more interesting to us.
