So I wanted a 924 project car beacuse my friend who is a porsche mechanic told me 924s would be a good starter car. A few years back he rebuilt an engine for his 924 track project which he ended up trashing, however he kept the engine and a whole bunch of parts. I found a 924 in amazing condition for $300 and my friend said he would sell me his brand new rebuilt engine for $100 with all the rest of the parts because he just wanted it out of the garage. So now my car is running after 2.5 months of work. let me tell you what I got so far.

1979 Porsche 924 N/A
Color: Mexicobeige

Engine:

was a 2.0 but bored out and now is a 2.1
euro pistons
head ported and polished
performance camshaft
lightened flywheel (was 21 lbs, now 11lbs)
brand new carbon kevlar clutch
all new seals
aftermarket throttle body
a few more things here and there

Exhaust:

Bursch Headers
High Flow Cat
Catback Magnaflow muffler
(car sounds AMAZING)

In a matter of 2.5 months i took out the old engine and put the new one in. Couple of weeks ago we got the car running almost perfecly. The car would be running and driving but the clutch was put in backwards. In the process of flipping the clutch I am changing the transmission to one with 50,000 less miles, fixing the only oil leak on the engine (rear main seal), and fixing the linkage (its really sloppy). So far including the price of the car ($300), the price of the engine and all the parts ($100), and random new parts I had to get I am only in $500 and the car is running and almost drivable.

This is my first project car and first porsche at that. I had a couple of questions that hopefully some of you guys can help me out with.

1) It looks like the hood wont clear the distributor, will I have a problem with that or does it just look like I will?

2) Is there any other job that would be worth doing while the whole drivetrain is out? (anything besides the flipping of the clutch, rear main seal, linkage, and transmission?)

3) There is a pretty good chance my thermo time switch is broken and I was wondering if anyone has done the in-cabin toggle (or any other type of switch) switch that bypasses the thermo time switch so that I can control the cold start injector? If so I would like so more info about that because I really like the idea.

Plans for the future:

1) 944 suspension swap with the 5-bolt conversion
2) Full stereo (My friend is giving me his $400 alphine head unit, and I work at a company that provides me discounts of high end stereo equipment at dealer prices)
3) The entire interior is almost perfect except for the carpet (its all faded) and the front seats (cracked). I plan on re-dieing the carpet and getting new front seats.

I would love to hear some positive feedback on what you guys think. The car sounds absolutely amazing and every time I turn it on for my friends I get even more and more excited for when I get to drive it.

thank you

Geez man, you got that thing for a steal! Does it need brakes?

It would helpt if you had a picture of the distributor. I also thought some of the stuff looked like it wouldnt fit, but it does, but maybe your case is different.

Oh, if you need brakes, I would just wait and do the 944 conversion. A mechanic did my brakes for me, and it was like $800. So hurry up and get the 944 stuff before you get your current brakes done.

Ryan

ps-Post some pics of the car man! We love to gawk at other peoples projects.

haha, how could I have forgotten. The guy who owned and drove the car before me put BRAND NEW brakes on the car right before he stopped driving it. So I have new brakes and new rotars. So I guess I dont need to hurry so much with that 944 suspension. Thank you for the tip though, i'll post some pictures soon, any idea how I could do that?

Create an account, then it is pretty straight forward. Upload the picture you want onto that website, and it provide links to use to post on messages boards for the pics.

well I can answer question about the distributor, there are two mounting hose for it and you use the wrong holes, look at the housing it sits in and there are 3 bolts holding it on, and you need to take them out and turn it to use the other set of holes, though I would recommend that you use a new gasket when you do this, as well you will have to reset the timing on the car.
