Has anyone run 225 width tires on the 6 inch rims on the back of their car? If so, what profile did you run? Looks like a 55 profile would be the correct one but there aren't a lot of tires in that profile here in the states. If you have, how was the handling and how did they look on the rim? Did they end up looking like balloons or make the handling weird? Thanks _________________ 79 924 Sebring |

I have 195/60's on my 15x6 phone dials and they balloon off the rim about 1/4 of an inch. I would imagine that 225's would look a little funky.
I run 225/45's on 7.5 inch wide wheels on my GTi and they are flush with the edge of the wheels. So you'd effectively have 3/4 of an inch hanging off each side of a 6" wide wheel. _________________ Chris

I have 225/60 on my five bolt spiderwebs and everything looks normal. They are a little tall for my tastes, I prefer a slightly lower profile tire. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Right now I am running 205/60 15 at all 4 corners but they are quite worn and need to be replaced. Since I’m putting new tires on the car, I thought it might be a good time to go up a size on the back and try to fill up those fenders a bit more (I’m still keeping 205/60’s on the front). So I was looking at the BF Goodrich G-Force Sport tires (I’ve been a BF Goodrich fan since my first set of Comp T/A’s 20 years ago). On their website they specify 6 inch to 8 inch rims for the 225 width tire so I know it can be done safely. I wanted to go to a 215/60 but that tire doesn’t come in that size, so I was looking at the 225/50 or 60, but neither of those is quite the correct height. A 225/55 would be almost a perfect replacement for the height but they don’t come in that size either. I’m now thinking that I might try the 225 in a 50 or 60 but I don’t want to upset the handling because the car handles so well right now. Thanks to those who have already replied but I’m still looking for other opinions on the handling from people who have tried it. Thanks _________________ 79 924 Sebring |

I ran 225 / 50 x 15 Bridgestone RE71R's 225 / 50 x 15 tires on the 6 inch turbo rims many years . The car handled really wel and the only problem was when racing and going round a particularlly fast right hand corner on one of our tracks the car would squirm on the rim - as the tire stayed in contact with the road the rim would move a fraction to one side. Never did this on the road.
Also looked really cool with the 225/50s _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

if you're concerned about what diameter they'd be and all that, try this tyre converter from toyo
http://www.toyo.co.uk/tyre_converter.php
I'm sure somewhere else I've seen a better version, but this will work to work out what profile you should have to keep your rolling circumference the same...

Going to a little shorter of a tire is not going to hurt in the least. I drove my car on 205/40/16s for some time, no ill effects. I think any change to the suspension geometry was more than compensated for by the lack of any sidewall flex.
As for the speedo, going from a 55 to a 50 profile is not going to significantly skew it. Just be warned that your speedo will be about 10% optimistic. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

YMMV... I race on 225/45/15 Hoosiers, on the 15x6" spiderweb rims.
Takes a lot of talent and experience, not to mention the right equipment, to get them on. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Thanks for all of the good feedback on the tire situation. I've decided not bother with the 225's. I believe I'm going to stick to the 205's and get the brand/model tires that I want. Thanks again. _________________ 79 924 Sebring |
