Ok, I have read through the FAQs and since I left the house today without double checking my car (spare me the torture) I am not sure what I can put on my stock 79 924. I planned on ordering the tires today before lunch so I appreciate your feedback.

With the stock 4-bolt set up, cookie cutter rims, what size should go on that rim versus what would be best option to fit for performance.

There are three tire size listed here:
http://www.924.org/techsection/technical.htm

But tires.com lists 165/80 R14. I want a wide footprint but can't afford to plus size my rims or upgrade the suspension right now. Both the FAQs and tires.com do have the 185/70 R14 listed - so that seems to be the safest tire size to go with. But, would 195/65-14 be too wide and be prone to problems AND look to short in the stock ride hide - like a 4x4 with a 6 inch body lift on stock tires - lol?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

924 rim/tire sizes started at 5.5x14 and 165HR14,
then in '79 changed to 6x14 and 185/70HR14.
Equivalents to 185/70HR14 that will leave you with a wider tire, but the same or virtually the same overall diameter (and that are acceptable for use on a 6" wide rim) are 205/65R14 and 215/60R14.
205/65R14 will cause your speedometer to read 1.23% slower than the actual speed (at 60mph, speedo will read 59.2mph), while 215/60R14 causes only a 0.17% difference and will read 60mph when you're doing 60.
Look here - http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
A Yahoo search on tire size calculator brings up more.

Hello!!I put a 205/60 14 in the original rim of my 924 "82..and very good. The external diameter is smaller than the 185/70, it dont mind my becouse i prefer a shorted gears..and i dont have any problem with my local vehicle inpections, TUV.
But if you can buy a 215, put it, beucose you wouldnt have problems..

This is my 205, no so wide like i would like..

thanks for the clarification on this guys - its a huge help.

I think I will go with the 215/60R14 since I get teh widest tread and least amount of speedometer deviation. Although santi's tire is a 205 the profile is the same and it looks nice - not too much wheel well showing - donn't like people lookin g up my skirt - no I'm not a girl, just sounded like a good anology.

Thanks again - big help.

This and the Bilsteins I'm ordering will make a huge difference in how the car handles/feels - can't wait!!

FINALLY - the IOU I was waiting for finally came through and I've got 215/60 r14 installed over the weekend. I'm not happy about the brand - Futura GLS Super Sport but its a comparable trade and the difference is very noticeable.

Now, I'm motivated to get the cooling problem resolved but this class for my MBA is kicking sucking my time up right now.
