I got water pump and belts done on my 1987 924S. When the Porsche tech took out the old pump it did not
have a thermostat in it. a new one was put in but it still runs hot.
before it ran hot but would cool down bit quick I think after a bit but now it stays around half way point most of the time
highway driving with outside temp around 60-70. driving around town it gets more like half to 75%. The
fan works I can hear it running for a while after turning of the car. Running at higher RPMs like between
2000 - 3000 seams to help and keeps the oil pressure strong.
What is the normal running temp on these cars?
The heater coil is shot. turn up the heat on high and blows cold turn it down and it blows warm-hot.
radiator looks ok on out side.
Maybe just clogged inside?
There is plenty of antifreeze in the tank.
The engine it's self is in excellent condition according to the tech. After having the balance belt set it runs
like a charm nice and smooth.
My only other complaint is a bit of a vibration in the steering at 70-80 MPH
Got the car back just in time to put it back in the garage while I take the family on vacation. Had it the shop
for three weeks weighting for a water pump finally tract down one my self. grrrr _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

| Hi, I am before front engine job. I have new antifreeze and termostat. My car keep temp on first mark(between white and middle) when driving with const. speed (aprox. 80 km/h). When driving in traffic temp goes to third mark when fan kicks in and then cools down to first mark. When replacing pump I will replace radiator(leaks when outside temp is low). I will write my experience with new pump and rad. |

I think the fan temp switch may need replaced. I don't think the fans are kicking on soon enouph. It kick on about a minute after shutting it off the other day. car cools down once I getting going to speed but still not where I would think it should be.
How do I test and replace the switch. I have seen the topic but can't find it now. _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

I started running AC in trafic. That made a big difference. both fans kick in I have been running more like around the first line. I should get my ac charged it runs cold but not freezing so I wasn't useing it. _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

The A/C also boosts the RPM which circulates the coolant better- the 924 water pump is meant more for high/mid RPM thrashing than idling, so I'm told. _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S

I got the switch ordered, $7. now on to bearings and transmission.
I am getting a bit of a wining noise and a little trouble going into second at low RPMs I' going to start with
an oil change. any suggestions beyond that? the noise gets most noticeable after down shifting and using the
engine to slow down the car on hills. makes a bit of a grinding like sound some times. could it be my clutch,
torque tube bearings or something worse? I get a bit of a clunking sound when letting up the clutch fast even
in neutral _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

Where did you get your switch? I swear the cheapest i saw was $14
Try Swepco 201 gear oil. YOu will need about 2 1/2 quarts, that might fix your grind. Also, check the nuts on the shift linkage to see if they are loose. Check the firewall around your clutch pedal mount to make sure it isn't cracked. Keep in mind as far as manual trannys go, the ones on these cars are LOUD little buggers even in normal operation.
As for motor oil, (if that's a thing you hinted at) I really like the Castrol GTX High Mileage, it really does help with leaks, my car hasn't wet it's bed for quite some time while running it. _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S

My rad fan doesn't come on either, at all. I replaced the switch and it didn't help, So I've just become accustom to using my AC all the time during the summer. Which is fine since the heater never really turns off unless the AC is one, and then it still comes out the other vents. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

It annoys the carp outta me that the heater doesn't turn off. even with the knob all the way off. I have considered many times running a switch to truly turn it off. _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S
