I am looking for some help with the installation of the long parking brake cable on my 85.5 944. I know it is a '44 but part numbers appear to be the same and good advice abounds on this board.

Here's the issue:
I have an 85.5 944 with @200K mi. I have owned the car for about two months. The parking brake does not work. The sheath on the long cable is worn through in spots and the cable is frozen so I bought a replacement.

Before I put this all back together, I want to make sure that it is correct. On my 924 there is a guide tube pn 477 609 723 that fits into the trailing arm (steel). The end of the cable passes through the tube which holds the sheath of teh e-brake cable away from the trailing arm. This is not present on my 944 but when I look at the parts diagrams it looks like it should be there so I ordered two guide tubes from Pelican. When they arrived, I realized that the hole in the trailing arm for the parking brake cable to pass through is too small for the base (fat end) of the guide tube to fit in.

Now for my question: Is this part required for the 85.5 or does the end of the cable come all the way to the arm? Without the guide tube, the cable appears to be so long that I may not be able to adjust properly. Do I have the wrong part(s) or am I missing another part? Is my car 'special' or am I trying to put this together improperly?

Thanks,

Rob

I just rebuilt the parking brakes and replaced the cables on my 924S. There is no guide tube required. The end of the cable housing simply butts up against the hole in the trailing arm.

By 85.5 I'm assuming late 85 with aluminum arms.

Manning, thanks very much for the info.
Yes, the car has aluminum trailing arms. I thought perhaps a PO had put it back together improperly in order to jury rig the brake. Now I can continue to put this car back together. She will be back on the road soon.

Thanks again,

Rob
