What kind of work does it need done on it? Anything you would need an extra set of hands with? My expertise is mainly with the 2.5L type engine, i know the two are very different from each other, but if you really get in a bind... let me know. I am located in Oyster Bay, exit 43 on the LIE. _________________ 1987 Zermatt Silver Porsche 924S <-- Sold in Nov. '04

Hi there, thanks for the fast response!
The car is the 77 924 Martini addition, 4cyl non-turbo. A few months ago i started the car to put a little charge on the battery, the car started and was running really well, i then stepped inside the house for a few minutesrs. When i returned the car was not running. I tried to restart it and it would fire and then quit when i let off the key as if it were trying to run. A friend suggested it may be the ballast resistor, but a do not have a good working multimeter to test it. i do smell fuel when i'm cranking it over so i dont suspect a fuel delivery issue. could the timing belt have failed?
Anyhow, i'm at my wits end here and really want to get her running for my wife. I'm located in Brentwood off exit 52, actually closer to the southern state.
Thanks again for your time

If the timing belt totally failed (snapped) it would be easy to tell. Remove the timing belt cover on the front of the engine (a few bolts and it comes off). If the belt is snapped you'll be able to tell immediately. The belt may have just slipped a few teeth, check the inner edge of the belt for damage or wear. Good time to change the belt and tensioner, they are something like $10 a piece. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

You should actually be able to see(at least in my car) the timing belt and back of the cam gear from the cockpit. With the hood up, look between the gap of the hood and windshield, and crank on it to see if the belt is moving with the cam gear.
Otherwise check the fuel pump relay? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Its strange to hear you all talk about a broken timing belt with such a airy mood! Every time i think of a broken belt i think of crushed valves.. .
But if you do need any help i just finished up finals and have a solid four months off. Wouldnt mind swinging by and helping you with anything..though like i said im not very familiar with the 2.0L engine. _________________ 1987 Zermatt Silver Porsche 924S <-- Sold in Nov. '04

The non turbo can break a timing belt and not damage itself.
The turbo and 2.5 lt motors is a different matter. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

SM Motorsports located at 140 Lakeville RD, New Hyde Park, NY 11040 (516) 775-8655 are very good with 924/931 cars, along with all the other Porsches.
Sonny is the owner. Tell him that Peter, with the grey 924 sent you. Good work:fair prices. I use them to handle any repairs that I don't have the time to do myself and have always been satisfied.
They tech insepct my 924 before I take it to the track.
They also checked over my work after I comletely rebuilt my 931.
Great bunch of guys who don't look down upon you that you only drive a 924.

I am in Mineola. I have 4 Porsches all taken care of by the same guy. Cheap and fast, and a Porsche fanatic. Just the kind of guy you need. TechnoDuck was here the other day and he can tell you if my guy is good or not.
Call me and tell me where you are and I will let you in on the best secret in LI

ok so.... started car, ran for a few minutes, then died? now it starts then it dies? try this for me please...
go to start it, act like its a carburator, give it a little extra gas.... (enough for it to level out at 1000 ish rpms....) if that works its your DME Relay, go buy one, replace it, (its in the haynes) and your car is fixed..... _________________ Proud owner of

Whoa, easy there. A '77 924 doesn't have DME or a DME relay. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

chanches are it might be the ignition switch. It will cut out while you are driving then start up without a problem. cheap fix. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Vince, when i turn the key the engine briefly fires then quits, it wont stay running. i'll clean the ignition switch, and i'll also pull the fuel pump relay and check it too.
and note to: sodapop, thanks again for the parts!!!!!! |
