Okay the guy who bought my car on ebay seems legit, got a call he's going to send me 1000 now and the rest cash when he picks it up. He's coming from Ontario and wants to drive the car back. First thing I told him is that I wouldn't recommend that but he still wants to do it. He said if it runs good it shouldn't be a problem.
Okay well he's an adult it's his choice. But like I said the car gives me headaches and seems like exhaust is getting in from somewhere. I phoned him back and told him that the car seems to have a exhaust leak inside the car even though the exhaust itself has no leaks at all. He said is there rust? I said no rust holes but could be the rear window.
So anyways going on I'm worried this guy is going to drive the car back to Ontario and die or something bad is going to happen. the car mechanically drives good right now other than hot start problem.
but I still get headaches and it's exhaut for sure with my Co measures.
I already told the guy about the exhaust and getting headaches from short trips so what else can I do?
I thought maybe I should just tell him to pay me the 1000 and instead of paying me the other 1000 (to get the car shipped to Ontario). I don't want to be responsible for something bad happening to this guy even if I told him all the problems. Driving across Canada in a old 924 with leaking fumes would be stupid. He just asked me if there is a sunroof and I said yeah, I guess he might take the sunroof out but what if it rains etc.
This is too stressful I should have just sold the car locally. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I think this is retarded the guy is going to pay airplane ticket to vancouver, pay gay, food et to drive to Ontario. I should tell him to put that money to shipping and pay for the rest with my own money that I'll get from him, total 2000.
rail shipping gave me a quote of 1,175. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Just let him do what he wants. If you've fully disclosed any known problems with the car, such as the fumes and he still decides to drive it, thats his decision. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Yeah but I don't want to kill someone for some money. Maybe he doesn't get how serious a exhaust leak is especially when you're driving fo 5+days.
he also wants me to pick him up from the airport, I'm not sure if I should I don't really trust some stranger. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Sounds like it could be the rear hatch seal. If that's the case, you could, in a pinch, just duct tape the rear hatch shut to keep the fumes out. I know, it'll look pretty tacky, but hey............at least it'll get him home where he can fix it.
Does it leak when going through one of those high pressure, brushless car washes? Could give you an idea where the leak is. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

I've already used foam tape and the rear hatch looks like it is sealed but it now squeeks and makes lots of noise when driving. but I still get headaches and my CO detector did read 37 ppm with both windows closed at iddle my highest reading was 60 ppm. 6-10 hours of driving at these levels can make you pass out or worse. with windows open I still get headaches but I would think it shouldn't be as bad.
I had my exhaust checked twice for leaks, new pipes from cat back and new muffler. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Are you sure the rear glass isn't separating from the metal frame at the top where it meets the roof line??? _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

could be maybe I don't even know and I just want to get rid of the car and I don't have time to search for things right now.
maybe I should just phone him back tomorrow and tell him to save his money and not buy the car anymore.
I thought about it and this car wouldn't be safe to drive to Ontario. I can either offer to have the car shipped partly at my expense or cancel the transaction.
It wouldn't be right to let him drive the car to Ontario with CO fumes.
I would have to phone him tomorrow though, he's sending me 1000 first then the rest he wants to pay later. I can just tell him to save the other 1000 for shipping.
I would rather lose a 1000 than worry about having some guy driving to Ontario with deadly fumes. _________________ 78 924 sold.

your've disclosed things like exhaust leak etc - then let the old saying apply Cavaet Emptor apply - buyer beware.
Anyway once he's paid the dollars and the car leaves you hands forget about it. Unless the car is even worse than what you say it should be able to make a 5 dy trip if he's respect's a 20 + year old car.
if you're still worried about exhaust fume stehn just go to your local palstic dealer, grab a sheet of perspex and cut a piece roughly the same shape as the passenegr's window - stick this in the the window hole, then cut a circular hole and glue a PVC downpipe (plumbing bend) bend into the hole with bend facing forward - this will direct fresh air into the car and help dispell any exhauts fumes. Once the dude gets the car home he can fix it if he wants. _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

John, sorry, I honestly have no clue what you mean by the cutting a piece of plastic the size of my window.... maybe i"m really tired right now.
I did not mention getting headaches and having exhaust leaks in the auction but I phoned him right now and told him I get exhaust smell in and headaches and have only driven the car to school which is a 15 minute drive and not a 5 day trip.
maybe tomorrow I'll go buy a lot of duct tap and duct tape the entire back hatch from all around from the inside and test it with my CO again. the hatch should be airtight now but still.
I'm honestly confused as to how I still get CO readings. exhaust was checked other than manifold and downpipe and they said no leaks.
I covered the vent in the engine bay but nothing changed.
theres no obvious fix or I would have done it buy now. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I think in all seriousness, that you should let the guy take the car. If you want to give yourself some peace of mind, supply a snorkel with the car and tell him to use it. You can't really take the hit on paying some of the shipping of the car yourself.
Don't break your own back (or agonise) over his stupidity. _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Lift the hatch and remove struts.
Tape a sheet of plastic over the body on the hatch area then close the hatch. Any fumes should be trapped between the hatch and the plastic. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

When you hand over the car don't forget to tell him about this forum. I'm dying (no pun intended) to find out how this pans out!
Look, you've been honest about the car, the dude's his own man, what happens to him after after he leaves you is down to him. Quit worrying! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

I thought I wasn't honest enough. I didn't mention the exhaust leak on ebay because it would sound bad and I didn't think someone would drive across the country with it.
so I phoned the guy and told him I get headaches and it may possible by leaking from the back window.
I thought maybe I should phone him tomorrow and tell him that it may be dangerous to drive with the leaking fumes all the way to ontario. I thought maybe he does not know how serious the leak is and I don't want someone dying.
5 days of driving with a CO leak can kill you if there isn't proper ventilation. On the freeway with the windows cranked open I doubt there would be dangerous CO levels.
even in the car with windows closed I've never gotten a higher reading than 60 ppm which isn't huge but with 8+ hours of straight driving it can be dangerous. _________________ 78 924 sold.

um so how will he see behind him...... also I'm not 100% sure its the hatch I gave up trying to figure it out. I already bought insulation foam sealant in a can than turns into hard insulation which I was going to spary into the shifter foam seal stuff under the shifter. _________________ 78 924 sold.
