Is the appeal of the 924 (after so many years) that it's a (cheap) Porsche? I mean if the same car was produced as a Hyundai would any of you care about it any more? I own an '82 924 and I'd judge it as a good car in its day (or thought not great) but by modern standards a piece of crap.

Where are the rest of the 1982 sports cars, why is your Porsche still on the road?

yeah obviously, I would expect cars to improve after 2 decades..... It's like comparing your 1982 apple computer to your PC.

It is the worst porsche but if you look at all the other 1982 cars (except porshes ferraris etc). the 80s have some of the ugliest cars

design wise the 924 looks pretty nice compared to the cars of the 70s and early 80s. Even looks at the bmws of the early 80s they are pretty ugly.

maybe you should also compare your cell phone to the cool "car phones" of the 80s. If you look back everything from the 80s was a piece of crap..

except ninja turtles and the smurfs

also almost all cars from the 70s and early 80s that are not in really good condition have some serious rust.....

if it was a Hyundai it would be dust by now.

I dont care about the badge on the front. The only reason i can see for it is for dropping it in conversations but that gets old pretty quick. The reason i bought the car was the instant appeal of its looks(pop up headlights! ), the handling, the relativly simple maintenance, and the killer was the price(I guess people just overlook it because its a porsche, and if someone is looking for a porsche they want a 911 or a 928).

I know of no other car which would give me the same driving pleasure and comfort for similar money.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a piece of crap! But certainly, even when it was new, many complained that it wasn't really up to "Porsche" standards. Rough, unsophisticated engine, high NVH, parts-bin interior...
So I can see where you're coming from. Still, if you don't like yours, sell it! Problem solved!

For me?

Well, when I was a kid my best mate's old man bought a 924, then bought a Turbo. At the time it was most awesome thing I'd ever seen or been in. Looked like a bullet and went like one, too! I've had a thing for them ever since. Especially the Turbos.

I love the shape, they really appeal to me. Granted they're aging. But I'm one of those types that still thinks a 356 looks hot Others think a 356 look like a bathtub with wheels...
I actually like the quirky 80's-ness of the styling, long and low, with the vents and pop-up headlights.

I love the huge sunroof, very cool. It's especially good here in Brisbane where it's sunny most of the year.

I love the feel of the interior. Feels like sitting in a jet fighter compared to most modern econo-boxes. The gear-lever sits just so, pedals are near-perfect. There's heaps of room for driver and passenger and it's comfortable, surprising for such a small car. Mine's a late model Turbo so it's got everything, leather interior, power windows, air-con, etc...
My only complaint is that the steering wheel is not adjustable... even for a short-arse like me, the wheel sits a little low.

It's surprisingly practical. You can carry a whole lot of stuff in the back of one. Even a couple of kids

The handling is fantastic. Neutral, fool-proof. Grips like a cat on a rug

Mine being a Turbo, the performance is excellent. It goes like a cut snake and has a top speed that'd embarass any Hyundai's I can think of. I love the whistle of the turbo as the boost builds, and the shove in the back when it kicks in

Pretty impressive, considering it cost less than cheapest new Hyundai when I bought it... and it'd be almost as efficient!

you also lose less money....... the hyundai depreciates so fast so after you pay $15 grand or more for your new hyundai it'll be worth half that very fast..... and it'll keep on going doing...

just look at the car, it just screams sexy! it has the nice stream line look? if porsche remade the car and kept it the same 80's look, with a better more powerful motor, and kept it cheap, would you buy it? no fancey shit just a basic

Maby mechanicly or technicaly by today's standards the 924 is a piece of crap...but then again so are all the Ferraris, Lambos and all old sports cars of that era they just got old.....BUT(big round one) the 924 is still here, on the road...still works...still performs as in its first day of life...AND IT STILL SCREAMS SEXY !!

so all other old sports cars are a piece of crap...the 924 is a great car dude...


ofcourse i'm talking about 125 HP fully galvanised 924

I still didn't buy a 911

But I really love the look of my 924 if it had maybe 180HP (a turbo perhaps) I wouldnīt even dare to think about selling it.

My problem is that love fast and powerful cars

BTW I donīt give a shit about it being old, If I had the money a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing (circa 1955) would be my dream car

The early 924 is something else with none of the ammenteties
the later gets such as clutch slave,brake slave and maybe disc brakes
though I d never say there junk & although thell never bee in a class
such as a late 60s 912 is they will have something I hope alot people
ask me if Im tracking mine or plan too Im really surprised at how many of thesepeople know the model number as 924..I
stick up for my early car explaining its turbo bro or sister and tell them
it mutated into a 944 though did have success growing in its own as a 924s. Adding all the aftermarket pieces and massaging head and block
make it quite fun once you learn how to drive it..I drive mine daily
an carry a car cover damn top leaks.

Just counted up, and this is the 21th car I've had, over the last 13 years. Definately the best, although I've had some rubbish in the past (worst has to be the Renault 4) No plans to sell, well into 3rd year of ownership now.

It's just right, in every way for me.

First of all... the worst Porsche... BAH! Not in a million years. The 912 or the 914 are not 1/2 the car the 924 is stock. I think the early 924s with 95 hp left a bit to be desired... but the 1981-1982 cars imported to the USA are excellent automobiles. They are fully protected from rust... if properly taken care of. Have good electronics... where sparingly used, are reliable if taken care of and still have curb appeal. Yes I still get looks in my 924... and it is not some one putting their hand to their mouth giggleing.

I think it is an excellent car. Was the 924S and the 944 even better. Well yeah in some ways... but in others they are harder to work on and need a lot more in maintenance.

That is just my opinion of course. I have owned many cars since my 924 joined my family and none of them satisfied me as much as my 924 does each time I get behind the wheel. I must admit... I loved my Fathers 1989 Carrera 4. BUT... that was a 75,000 car compared to $19,000... and 7 years difference in release date.

Is the 924 going to go down in history as one of the best cars ever to roam the roads of this world... not likely... but it has made many an honor proud to be a Porsche driver. Check out how many happy owners are on this board!!!
