PostPosted: Sun Apr 23, 2006 5:34 am    Post subject: Shipping a car via rail? Reply with quote

My car sold on ebay and the buyer is in Ontario....He wants to know how much shipping will cost via rail. I don't even have time until thursday to check anything.

Where do I have to phone or go to get a quote? and how much trouble is it to get a car shipped with the rail. Can someone pick the car up from my house?

also most importantly where do I phone or go to find out this info...... I've no clue about shipping cars. I thought someone locally would buy the car.

thanks.

you should have had the buyer be responsible for shipping

buyer is responsible for he shipping, that's what I put down on ebay and then for additional comments I just wrote, will discuss shipping after auction.

I have final exams right now so until thursday I can't do anything. i don't mind phoning a few places for the guy and helping a bit even thought it is not my responsibility.

another person emailed me giving me an offer incase the buyer doesn't go through.

http://www.autorail.com/quote.php

I think it's about 1000 to ship from one end of Canada to the other, so maybe 500 bucks to Ontario from you.

Just a guess. Get an online quote and call.

And call now, it takes a week and a half from the time you call to the time you can ship, then it's another 10 days for transport.

You don't want yuor buyer waiting over a month for the car....

okay thanks.

I'm really busy until wednesday I work everday and I still have 500+ pages to read for my exams......... so I'm screwed.

I'll just phone them or email them to get a quote.

I really don't get why someone would want to buy a 924 from here to ship to Ontario...... I'm sure there are 924s in Ontario, oh well.

Yeah, you're right, it doesn't make much sense.

He didn't offer to overpay you and have you give him back the extra, did he???

No why?

can't they just bill the guy when the car arrives there or would i have to pay here.

I just emailed them for a quote, it takes 24 hours. then I'll email the guy and see how he wants to pay me.

If I were you, I would let the buyer set up all the shipping details. You can agree to deliver the car to a specific location for loading but don't take on the job of arranging the shipping. If something goes wrong, he may try to hang the damage/cost on you and it could be more than the car is worth.

He bought it, let him figure out how to get it to where he's at.

Sorry, I've just read too many horror stories about shipping cars, either by transport or by rail. One guy spoke about having an immaculate 951 he bought shipped by transport truck and they parked it on the trailer below an old POS that leaked battery acid and other fluids all over the car.

Just let the buyer know you'd be happy to facilitate getting the vehicle picked up but that's it. Let him make the arrangements and choose the shipping company.

Just my .o2 pesos.

I'll ask him if he wants to do it himself. If I do it I would tell him that it's not my responsibility what happens to the car once it leaves my house.

isn't it kind of the same thing as shipping anything else? IF something happnes while shipping he would have to deal with the shippers not me.

maybe I'm wrong. I can't see how I could be legally in trouble for any damages caused by the shipper.

He could refuse delivery. You want HIM to make the arrangements.

Tim,

My suggestions:

Do you have his money? If not do nothing until you do.

Once you have his money, ask him to come get the car.

If he wants help, offer to be at home when the shipper comes to get the car. If the car must be delivered to the train station or a trucker's yard and the car is still legal and drivable, go ahead, but take pictures of the car once you drop it off.

If its not legal or drivable, offer to call a tow truck at his expense to deliver it to the shipper.

Ok thanks. I'll just give him the quote from that website and tell him to arrange the shipping himself.

I haven't been paid yet so I'll have to see if this guy even pays me, he's only been an EBay member for 30 days and has one feedack. I know apparently a lot of people on ebay don't get that they have to pay for the car once they win it.....

so if the guy arranges the shipping he would just pay for it there right?

I might be back.... I'm looking for a 924S or 944, but I probably won't find a 924S they're more rare.

Most likely you have been the victim of a deadbeat Ebay buyer.

I would email him and demand payment with a threat to report him to eBay.

Once you have his money, THEN, give him the quote for transportation.
