I am looking to rebuild my 80' 931 turbo and found this kit from turbo city
All seems well, however, the ad says does not specify a year range for the 924 as the turbos are different in the 81'. Or, is the difference between the turbos the mating of the turbo to the engine?

The mating of turbo to exhaust manifold, exhaust headpipe and intake are the same between s1 and s2 (aside from some differences in gaskets or sealing rings used). Differences between s1 and s2 have to do with the size of the impeller and/or compressor wheels with the s1's being larger and slower to "spool-up". The parts that the repair kits replace should be the same between s1 and s2.
Only try your own rebuild with the repair kit if there is no damage to the shaft - if that's worn or otherwise damaged, it would need to be welded and re-machined. If you try to rebuild a turbo with a bad shaft, you'll have wasted the cost of the rebuild kit, and the effort to remove and reinstall it and will find yourself doing it all over again much sooner than you'd like. -Don't ask me how I know this.
Also- don't be suprised to find (actually, pretty much expect) the exhaust side housing to have a crack visible from the inside. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

| Does damage to the shaft have any obvious signs? Does that cause the impeller to be out of balance? I am pretty sure it is a seal as it happened all at once, however, the turbo does have 88k on it. |

It was just shy of 10 years ago when mine went and I tried a rebuild kit on it. The way it goes bad may be a part-way reliable indicator of how damaged things are. Mine froze up. As far as visible damage with it disassembled, there was quite a bit of coking on the shaft and in the seal area and once cleaned off, the shaft wasn't perfect. -Just how perfect it has to be for you to get a successful rebuild done yourself, I don't know. I think at least 2 on this board have successfully rebuilt there own with just the kit. One was 924RACR - maybe he'll remember well enough how much, if any, damage there was to his shaft to give you an idea.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. | What is the fix for cracks inside the exhaust housing? Are you losing boost because of the crack? |

My first turbo rebuild was done by Turbo City, and it worked fine. But, I rebuilt my own on the second time, and used a kit from PartWerks in Chicago. It was around a hundred bucks, and is still working great. So, you have to decide if you want to tackle this job or not. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |
