Well, took some final measurements on my head and block before I sealed them together today. My new engine is definitely interference now. The 9.3:1 Euro pistons don't have a relief area cut into them big enough to take the 44mm and 37mm valves. Kind of what I expected, just never got around to actually checking it all out. I guess I am in the same boat as all 931, 924S, 944, 951, 968 owners now, if my timing belt goes I am in trouble... _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

I don't get why some people are scared of interference engine (almost all new engines are interference). As long as you replace the belts on time and tension it properly its not going to just fail.
plus on the 924 it takes like 10 minutes to replace the belt.
still makes you a little nervous if you're doing it yourself. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Yes, I agree with timstar!.
Changing the belt isnt anything hard, and doesnt cost that much.
And actually, ive seen a few valves go anyway on Volvos, that should be bulletproof when the timingbelt goes.
New valves is $15 each i think for the 924, not that expensive if the luck isnt there. (if only the valves goes, and not hte whole piston etc)
Are these valves on the regular euro 924 (125hp)?.... |

It's that now the OEMs have made it difficult, and expensive to replace the belts on new cars, and when you have to do it or else, you're going to have go give them $$$. I think my sisters Chrysler minivan was like $700 for the major scheduled maintaince. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

well, changing timingbelt on a Audi 80 2,3l 5cyl, took me 7(!) hours!.
I had to remove all parts of the front.. so 7hours x lets say $100 + material ends up somewhere there too.
In the 924 you have lots of space =) |

The $200 tool makes it a lot faster job. (normally a $175 job at a shop) _________________ Ryan Moone

Hey, it could be much worse, with the 1979 Ferrari 512 BB Berlinetta Boxer you apparently had to remove the engine to change the timing belt. Apparently a $5000+ job. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

but if you own a Ferrari you're rich so it won't be a big deal.
I know even on some vws you have to drop the transmission to change the belts. You also have to lift the engine to replace the water pump. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Chrenan - for the 924 the price of a new tensioner and timing belt is still less than the factory-spec 944 t-belt. Just change them every year or so. I just had to do some front of engine work on my 944 and the balance shaft and cam belt tensioners were more than $150 together! If interference was so bad, Porsche would have found a way around it for the 924 Turbo. Think of all your lovely high compression!
I must admit, though, that one of the charms about my wife's 77.5 924 is the fact that the t-belt can break any time it wants to and we won't be in trouble. Well, no more trouble than thumbing a ride or going for a walk. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

There were several muscle cars that needed to have the engine pulled to change spark plugs as well, but those were mostly the Hemi Darts and such. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red
