|
|
| I have a set of nice looking 17" wheels with tires available to me that I can buy for next to nothing, but they have a 5 lug pattern which won't fit on my 80 931 with 4 lugs. Does anyone know what I would need to do to change these over to 5 lug hubs so that I can get an adapter to make these wheels work. I want want to spend as little as possible so I think the 5 lug brake upgrade is out of the question. |

Sry to disappoint you but making some sort of adapters will cost you more than genuine 5-lug conversion.
Usually the new wheels needed for 5-lug conversion are the most expensive part of the conversion.
Buy the wheels, and raise some more cash for the 5-lug brakes. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

If you made a mention of your location in your profile????
In Oz it is costly to change over due to rare spares but in the US a 5 lug brake changeover should only cost a couple of hundred. Thats with new bearings, pads and caliper kits.
Most guys do it in a day. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Agree with what the others have said.
But "Search" is your friend. Use it. There are numerous threads detailing parts required, procedures and costs.
Using the advanced Google search of 924board.org is even better (thanks Peter_in_AU for that tip, it's saved me plenty of time) _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| thanks for the quick replies, and I added my location. I only paid $500 for the car and I already have another expensive project car so that is why I don't want to put too much money into this car. If the conversion would only cost a couple hundred dollars I might consider it, I thought I read it was around $800. |

You can pick up most parts second hand from board members or the wrecking yards.
You will probably have to replace pads, bearings, brake lines and overhaul the calipers.
Parts you need:
For my '84 but an '80 is similar
On the front you would need: steering knuckles, callipers with pads and hardware, splash plates, rotors with "hats" and bearings, and the flex hoses. With your 84 924, you do not need to replace the lower arms or the ball joints.
On the rear you would need: parking brake cables, wheel spacers, calipers with pads and hardware, rotors, backing plates with parking brake assemblies, and the hard brake lines that run along the trailing arms.
Then of course, you will need to replace the wheels and the spare.
I also recommend replacing the brake calliper seal kits (about $10 for each front, and $15 for each rear), and carefully inspecting the brake pads and calliper hardware to see if they need replacing. The calliper hardware is available as separate pieces, or in per calliper kits (about $40 per axle).
You do not need to replace the rear torsion bar carrier, trailing arms, spring plates, or cv axles (unless you want to install alloy rear trailing arms). _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Being in AZ, you would probably be better off going to one of your local Pick A Part self-service salvage yards and getting the stuff yourself.
Here is SoCal, a full set of brake conversion parts from a 944 in one of the Local Pick A Parts would cost me less than $100 (less the wheels). Wheels sets are harder to come across at Pick A Part, but they only cost $25 a piece (including wheel and tire) if you can find some.
There was a fresh 944 in the yard the last couple times I dropped in at the closest yard in Ontario, so I didn't even bother to take the brakes or the wheels. |
