There were clips that were attached to the mirror that snap into a holder in the mirror housing originally.

If your mirror was glued in, that was a Mickey Mouse Repair.

You have to be able to snap out the mirror, because the mirror glass must be removed to reach the mirror motor assembly, or to take the mirror on and off the car.

The clips also provide the electrical path for some of the car that have electrically defrosted mirrors.

If you glue the glass in, you will probably ruin the mirror motor in the process, and you will not be able to disassemble the mirror without breaking the glass.

ok so it didnt stay on but all the pictures on the page dont solve my problem because only the glass mirror came off its a double sided mirror and there is a black frame left in the whole mirror. i dont know how im going to get it back on but i think glue just might work because it wont interfer with the heating parts. but i could be wrong

Did this problem, (only the double sided glass mirror popped off, how does one reinstall the glass?), ever get solved?

There are a few options and maybe others will chime in but here's what I've tried...

You can find sheets of 3M VHB adhesive just about anywhere. Since our mirrors are heated you need to make sure it is cut to size. This is the best option and will last the longest. That said, it will poof the mirror out a bit.

Another option is 3M badge adhesive. This is essentially the same glue the factory used but VHB is better for glass so you may be doing it again in a few years.

I hope that helps!
