I found a 931. Its red, has rust, looks like it was a cheap paint from black. The interior is rough. The owner says it runs but the is no inspection since 02. He is asking for 1000 but since it has sat a long time I think I can work him down to half that in cash.

Do I want to?

I have a 924S '88 thats alittle rough but its too late to turn back on, as I've probably got $1000 in stereo installed.(no subs) But it is an ongoing project to become the supercar(937) I eventually want(LS-1), so I never drive it.

I see this as a opurtunity to have a car I can tear the interior out of and have some fun with.

but I don't know very much about 924 motors, probs... or 931 motors, probs...

so some one give me a hand

Hello,

be carefull when you want to buy a 931. If you have mechanical costs, and that means engineproblems, the bill can become very high...
Turbo, headgasket, exhaustgaskets, electrical... All these things can give you headaches. If you are not used to work on cars, and with working I don't mean putting a stereo in it, then your mechanic will laugh.

Don't let the cheap price guide you...

well what are problem areas, I know 944 flaws not 931. I'm good with a wrench if I have instructions. I looking for some cheap fun, as I have my nice 924S and I'm looking for a rundown on problems that'll get in the way. I may even track it when I get the S finished.

First of all make sure that the engine runs, let the owner start it up. You can have a compression test, but for the asking price he won't do it. Can you post some pictures, because that will give a view of the condition.

If the turbo is bad, you will have to overhaul it. Next to that, the wastegate can be stuck, the exhaustmanifold broken, ....

It is not so easy.

Look at this board, use the "search" option for the 931 technical discussions and you will find 101 things that can go wrong.

Costs can go quickly to a couple of $1000's, but also not so expensive.

But: if the car runs good, it is one of the most fun cars you can have.

Look at mine:

You do enjoy showing off that car of yours, eh?

Back to Ghosthacker... the scariest thing about the 924 Turbo is the interference engine. If the cambelt breaks, it's goodbye valves and maybe pistons, too. So make sure you replace it. They're only rated for three years, I've read. So even if it hasn't done much driving, the belt's probably due for replacement.

They also like regular oil changes. Don't skip it.

Of course the turbo will be relatively expensive to rebuild if it fails. But if you take care of it, it should last quite well.

What year 931 is it? There are some differences between the earlier ('79 & '80) cars and the later ('81-on) cars. For example, the ignition systems. Not that it's a big deal, just something to be aware of.

In general, the 924 engine, Turbo or otherwise, is pretty much bulletproof. The real problems are previous owners...

ANY car that's been sitting around for years (especially if it's out in the weather?) is a potential nightmare. Always expect the worst. That way you're never dissapointed...

Hey Khal,

just to show that I am proud to own a 924. Next to our 911 of course...

I am trying to get the interest of carlovers in 924's here in Belgium. It will take long, but I can live with it...

I hear that, its the same story with the 2.5 however I heard the belt can be changed easy on the 2.0. He said it was a '79 and it was a rough neighborhood, the tires were low but it had the 5 lug dish wheels (16's I think?) I left the paper with the VIN at work, it was very short and had two *'s.

I'll go back tommorow and check out some other things I've thought about i.e. AC, power windows, ect.

The windshield is cracked.

The more I think about this the more I think it could be an awesome track car, as long as it can be reliable till my 924S is ready for daily use.
