Here is what I learned when I bough my 96 Ford Taurus Wagon from an eBay Seller, and had it shipped from NJ to CA.
#1 If the car is drivable, you will save hundreds of dollars if you specify that you will drive the car to the Shipper's Dock, and Pick it up from the Shipper's Receiving Dock. You will still save more than enough money to rent a truck and a trailer and keep hundreds in your pocket, if the car is not drivable any distance, and you decide to deliver it to the Shipper's Dockand pick it up from the Shipper's Receiving Dock. MAKE SURE THAT YOU TELL EACH SHIPPER YOU ARE CONSIDERING USING THAT THIS IS THE WAY YOU WANT TO SEND THE CAR.
#2 Make sure that the Shipper that you choose is the actual company that will be transporting your car. They must own the trucks and employe the drivers. DO NOT USE A Freight Forwarder, or Broker who will contract with the cheapest, and least reliable trucker to move your baby. The Broker is only interested in how much he will make on the deal, and not the arrival condition of your car.
After you are sure that the Drivers and trucks belong to the Shipping Company you get the quote from, get it in writing that your car must be transported on compaly owned trucks by company employees. You would not believe the number of companies that turn around and send your car by contract truckers after claiming that your cars will travel otherwise.
#3 Make sure that the Trucking Company/Shipper carries adequate transportation insurance. The normal trucking insurance tariff of $.50 or $.60 a pound will not replace your car if it is destroyed or even damaged.
#4 Get firm transport and delivery dates from the trucking company. You don't want your car parked somewhere for weeks while the company takes its sweet time stopping and starting in every little town between here and there.
#5 Check the history of the trucking company with the BBB. There is also a government department that you can contact to check up on the trucking company. I don't remember the contact information, but they will be more reliable than the BBB. The BBB is only slightly better than no help at all.
#7 Shop around, I found quotes from $600-$2500 for the same services from different trucking companies.
#8 Ask what kind of truck your car will be transported on (covered and uncovered).
#9 Make sure that there is a full an comprehensive inspection for exisitng damage when the car is handed over to the trucking company, and carefully check for new damage when the car is delivered, before you sign the delivery receipt. |
