Every now and then, the Yanks just nail it. And this one's a beauty...

The Pontiac Solstice.

And, of course, they're not gonna build in RHD so we don't get it down here

Kenodog, reckon you should consider one of these instead of the MX-5/Miata, eh?

Good Looking, but weak on power.

Dunno about that...

Only 100kg's heavier than a 924 Turbo but the same power (as a Euro-spec, at that) and only a shade less torque. And no turbo... yet...

Considering it's competition is the MX-5/Miata, not a Corvette, I reckon it's got the goods.

(Much better looking, too, IMHO)

Reports are that the MX-5 spanks it in the true performance aspects, but I dig the styling of the Solstice.

Look at the warranty. That says it all. The car will be in a junk yard within 9 years of seeing the road. The build quality is total crap.

All depends on who you read and I do not care enough to find the articles I have read. So you win, I guess.

And if you add $18,000 to a car that pretty much makes it a different car. Let's see how we could apply $18,000 budget to that Mazda...hmmm.

Styling's not my cup of tea, but at the price it's an absolute give away.

You can't get a standard 'compact' for that money over here.

I have yet to read the SCI review of the car... I trust their judgement on sports cars, as they are genuine sports car and racing afficionados. I remember one article pitting a Corvette Z06 against the 996 GT3 on the track, resulting in the conclusion that not only was the GT3 faster, it actually felt and repsonded like a real sports car should, and the Corvette while fast, felt unbalanced through S curve transitions, at times felt too stiff, at other times not stiff enough, etc. They're not afraid of a little criticism, as are most major automotive publications.

Don't worry guys, I'm not claiming this thing is the be-all-and-end-all of sports cars. It's just cheap and cheerful and damn good looking. Certainly makes the MX-5/Miata look boring, even if the tactile involvement isn't quite up to Mazda's standards. I reckon it's great, more power to 'em!
