I read somewhere that until 1980 or 81 the 924 turbo is non-interference.

To 82-924: I'm well aware of what the timing belt is and what it connects to. Just wanted to see if it also drives the water pump like the one on my last car. Since I don't have the car yet, and I'm new to porsches, I didn't know.

Now, I thought I had also read somewhere that certain models weren't interference. But, your reasurrance that they are is appreciated. I will definitely replace that.

Only three things touch the timing belt:

The crankshaft gear
The tensioner
The camshaft gear.

This Turbo passed in on ebay with no bids and only a AU$4,500 starting bid -I don't know if it had a reserve or not?

Price is very contentious with these cars. Best I can tell you is that it's worth whatever you're willing to pay.

That being said, Turbo's are usually advertised anywhere between AU$5,000 - 10,000 and the non-turbo's are usually between AU$3,000 - 8,000.

There was a non-turbo going in Brisbane recently which looked good, nice and clean with a manual trans, etc. It had a starting bid of AU$7,500 on ebay and over several auctions without a bid it had dropped to a starting bid of AU$4,500. I contacted the bloke and he said he wouldn't sell for less than AU$5,000.

macBdog got a decent Turbo very cheap, so they are out there. Just keep looking. Don't jump at the first one you see

It depends who's got it and who's looking at it. The name carries a big pricetag with some people because they think Porsches are worth a lot. If you keep you eyes peeled you can find a running Turbo for $3K US or $3500 CDN. I don't know what the markets are like in other countries, but I paid $1500 for my car, knowing it needed a new transmission and some rust repairs. My brother paid $7500 for his 924 Turbo, complete with a fresh engine, turbo, new clutch, recovered leather sports seats... The guy had receipts for $10K worth of work in the last year.

I wouldn't pay more than $3K for a naturally aspirated 924, and that would be with 5 bolt wheels/brakes, sport suspension, no sunroof etc.

I wouldn't buy a 924 Turbo without 5 bolt wheels/brakes unless the price was really right.
