|
|
hi guys and gals,
I have an intermitant problem with the turn signals. Sometimes the turns signals won't light up or flash, the turn signal indicator on the dash is on solid, not blinking normal or blinking fast like a burned out bulb. I read the owners manual which only talks about the fast blink rate indicating a bulb out condition. I bought the Haynes 944 manual (covered that year, 1988) what a waste of paper(poor tree).
What does the turn signal indicator light mean when it is on and not flashing?
I noticed when the turn signal stopped working, and I had the hood up, the hood light comes on when i turn the left signal on (headlight s off). i replaced the flasher with a spare in the glove box (unknown condition, looks new) bought a new flasher to test , was going to put it in,but the turn signals are working again , so can't test it when they are working.
There must be a short or crossed wires somewhere, but before ripping the harness(s) apart, I thought it best to seek advise here first, as this is my first 924s.
any suggestions? |

The indicator lamp staying on in the car when the ignition is off, and the turn signal lever is activated is indicating that the marker lamps on one side of the car are on. This is a feature, not a defect. It is wired this way so the lights can be used to mark the car (as in when you are pulled over to the side of the road with the ignition off).
If the turn signal indicator stays on with the ignition on, and the turn signals do not blink, it is probably the flasher. Do not use a cheap generic replacement flasher from the local auto parts store.
The six volume Porsche 944 Workshop Manual is the manual that you want. It is expensive, but totally worth the money if you want to know about the 944 or 924S. It is not a feel good/hold your hand if you don;t know anything about cars manual.
You can check eBay for a used Genuine Workshop Manual. I have seen them sell for between $75-$150. I bought mine from a eBay Seller, brand-new for $100. Expect to pay $200-$400 for a new copy from the Porsche Dealer.
The CD and DVD copies that you will see advertised everywhere are illegal scanned copies of the factory manual.
The cheapest legal way to get a copy of the factory workshop manual is to buy a copy on micro/maxi fiche. They should still be less than $40 from a discounting Porsche Dealer. Uses the same fiche machine that VW dealers used to use, before they converted to computer parts books. Check your local VW dealers, and independent VW repair shops to see if they are ready to sell the fiche machine that they haven't used for years at a low price to you. |

Thanks for the reply,
I never thought to test the turn signal with the ignition off, will try that out. I should get a genuine replacement flasher this friday in the mail, rather that the autozone one I bought not knowing the condition of the spare in the glove box.
Problem or should I say good fortune is that the turns signals work now, but at least soon I shall have some replacement parts for troubleshooting and bringing this fun little car up to snuff.
next project the A/C clutch.
thanks again |

I hate that feature, it freaked me out one day trying to figure why my lights were one. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

Gohim,
i tried what you suggested about testing it with the key off, and with the key out of the ignition. the actual turn signals work as you say but the dashboard indicatator light does not come on or stay on unless the key is turned on. but then the blinkers will flash since the key is now on.
right now this is a mute point since the blinkers are working. i guess i will have to wait until the problem returns, which is the outside turn signals (with the key on) do not light nor flash, and the inside dashboard indicator light is on but not blinking. |
