im thinking of buying a 1982 PORSCHE 924.. its fairly cheap and that..
but:
the engine is pretty weak (2.0L)
is there any cheap ways for somebody who doesnt know that much about cars to increase the power of this engine? |

Nope, & there is no cheap way for somebody who DOES know that much about cars to increase the power of this engine. Do a search on the board & you'll find HEAPS of posts & info on increasing performance, but it is all very costly. Also check out the FAQ & Technical Section
Oh, & welcome to the board _________________ TJ

| I would imagine that Applebit is about $10K US into his car. That hardly meets the need of "cheap." Plus does it even run? |

Get a 924 Turbo, you can get pretty good power out of those engines for not very much money. 200+hp with boltons, 300+ with a turbocharger upgrade and better pistons. Pistons are easily sourced from aircooled VW applications, but you'll need to take them to a machine shop to have them machined to fit on the connecting rods.
No real potential in the NA motor, not without a ton of money put into it. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

I second that motion.
The Aussie-delivered ones are about 130kW straight outta the box and weight less than 1200kg's. Who needs upgrades?! Although add an intercooler and up the boost and you're probably looking at an easy 150kW+
Where in Oz are you darkone? There's a few of us up here in Brisbane (me, macBdog and Crunchie 57), tj924's in Toowoomba, Peter_in_AU down in Sydney and a few down in Melbourne (gwsg, kidporsche, leadfoot). There used to be a couple in W.A. (sandgroper and kye) but haven't seen them post for a long time.
leadfoot supercharged his NA and seems to have had good results. But I don't think it was easy or cheap...
As far as I know, there's not suppliers of bolt-on upgrades for these cars here in Oz. Not like you get with Jap turbo terrors, y'know. No "powerchip" you can drop in... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

You can use shims in the fuel dissy control pressure regulator and use an audi turbo WUR in replacement of the current WUR, it has a vaccum attachment that will respond quicker to manifold fluctuations.
Get an improved stock cam grind...
headers and exhaust upgrade next with a 2 1/4 inch piping and free flow muffler...
port and polish the head youself....
and if you have the expertise either turbo or supercharge the car as they respond well to boost.
Lighten your car as much as you can with fiberglass parts and remove sound deadening material etc depending on how much road noise you can handle.

Hey guys, I'm gettin' myself a 931 in about two days, so I just signed up here. There's obviously a lot of cats on this board who know some usefull stuff.
I'm going to be looking to do some upgrades to it, and of course, I wanna start off with the simple, bolt-on upgrades. I was wondering if I could maybe score a list of the bolt-ons I could do to her from you guys? I'm having trouble finding upgrade parts for this car online, so any suggestions you could make would be awesome, especially if you have any ideas where to look.

PS: I'm not mentally deficient or anything. I put a lot of work into my last car including an engine swap. I'm just brand new to the Porsche world and haven't learned much about the internals on this car yet. _________________ '81 US 931 "Rochelle" |

Chaos, welcome to the board!
Check your timing belt as soon as you get it, if your $10 belt breaks, you will bend valves. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Not to hi-jack this thread but maybe this link should be a sticky in the 931 Tech forum? So far it is the most concise article on the simple mods for the turbo cars that I have seen.

Thanks and thanks! That link is way helpful. Also, I didn't realize that the 924/931 engine was an interference. That's good to know ahead of time. I'll definitely hit up that belt. Does it connect to the water pump? The belt on my last car did. _________________ '81 US 931 "Rochelle" |

They're warning you about the timing belt. The one that connects to the cam gear / cam shaft. _________________ 1982 924 n/a |

Only the 931 is interference. The NA 924 is not. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
