The closest I come to go-karting is visting Chicago Indoor Racing. In fact, I'm dragging a few guys up there this Sunday to run a few races.

Yes indeed. I'm reliving my childhood with my son. Never had a go kart and always wanted one. We got an old kart from a friend. It had a 3.0 Briggs on it. We cleaned and painted the kart. Put on new cables, tires, brakes and then a Honda 5.5hp. Now you can peel out in that SOB. _________________ 1982 924 n/a |

A short time ago, I was reading an article about a guy that designed a go-kart that used a starter motor from a Toyota or Honda. He included the plans for it. The unique thing about that starter motor was it was very high RPM. I think he was using a deep cycle marine battery and it ran quite a long time between charges. Top speed was like 30 mph or so. It also had LOTS of torque. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

I had a go-kart once, a Margay, i think it was, with a McCulloch 90cc two cycle, totally ported out with twin tilison carbs, and even a fuel pump to keep up with the fuel demand. _________________ Ryan Moone

I always wanted to build one and install a Honda Gold Wing 1000cc motor on it. With the transmission. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

Theirs a place called all sport grand pix and they have an indoor track with sum 6 and 9 hp go-karats. Unforcunitly for me I’m not allowed to because I’m not 16. Also there is a track around me that has go karats that do like 120 mph there insane. The indoor place is in sterling VA so if any one is in the around here put up a post and ill see if I’m old enough to go by then. _________________ 1979 924 sebring project car (first car)

But everytime, he keeps wondering, how the hell he is gonna stop that thing. Obviously, you need wheelie bars, well thought out spoilers, good tires, and huge axle brakes. But they just dont make stuff big enough to stop a rocket like that - and don't even say parachute. If you have ever been in a car with one - you'll know that its like landing chest first on concrete when it gets deployed. I can't imagine the complications a 1000cc motor would give you - sounds like a death wish to me.

Death wish, eh? Hmmmm..........several years ago, I would've taken that as a challenge to do it. Today, not so much.
Still sounds like fun. I wouldn't be looking so much for top end speed as the manuverability. Probably go through a lot of tires. I would think this would have to be a mid-engine mounting since the weight would certainly be too much to control out back like that.
So you get an old used cart, cut the frame, reinforce and extend it, plop that motor right behind the driver's head and let her rip, right? Oh, and be sure to write your own epitaph first. Other's always have ways of screwing it up.
Anyone have an old cart for sale? _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

How about dropping one of those 600cc's into a mid-engine configuration ala Boxster? Widen out the rear and front tracks, "write your own epitaph" and you're on your way! _________________ Mike
