A 944 starter may fit, but would spin the 924NA engine backwards.
For the heat shield - I hear the factory version's a real pain to deal with, so you might just be better-off fabricating your own design. Maybe something that could be slipped around the starter after it's installed like a heat blanket. -But you'd want to have it held something like 1/2"-1" off the starter to allow an air space. -Otherwise, a blanket would hold in any heat that conducts through from the block. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. The PET have the best diagram for installation....
I used heat tape both on the outer side of the heat shielding and stuck to the starter and solenoid.
Don't get me started on what I did to the wiring to protect it....
It's easier putting in the top bolt from the top as at least you can just see where you're aiming at... it may seem like you get a better angle with your wrist from underneath but aligning the holes is harder.
If you going to fab your own make sure it protects the solenoid too, I believe the wiring is more prone to melting and shorting after having it happen to me twice without a heat shield installed, but it's worth protecting as well.
