i just spotted a 83 944 for sale price is 1600 cdn.

it says its in excellent contition, rebuilt motor, new clutch with receipts.

its says needs timing belt service

I don't even have 1600 to spend right now thinking of offering 1000 if it looks nice like the description says...

timing belt job would be another 1500-2000 from what I heard so 2500-3000 for a good condition 944 with new belts doesn't sound bad right?

but i haven't seen the car , "excellent " is just a word to someone else a piece of crap may be in excellent condition I don't know.

tomorrow is the last day of my summer before I start school again so I might go see it and take pics this time.

I'd stick with the 924 n/a and get it running right, the 944 will be an even bigger money pit if you're going to use shops to do any work needed...

So if you don't even have 1,600 to spend, and you're going to offer 1,000 that would leave you with 600 left, in the case that he'd take your offer(for 1/3rd of the asking price). Then a timing belt job would be "1500-2000" and you'll pay for that with the 600 dollars you've got left. Leaving you with a negative balance of 900-1,400$ in the case that you had exactly 1,600 to spend. If you had less than that, which it says you do you'd be in debt more.

It's one of those things that you have to just dream about. I file those in the, "If I won the lottery" catagory along with buying my '83 911SC and my 928GTS.

A "front of engine" service is $1500-$2500 US dollars.

If you had $1600 CN, and managed to drag the owner down to $1000 CN, you would only have $600 CN left.

Isn't $600 CN closer to $400 US, and doesn't that leave you $1100-$2100 US short?

I don't know what it's like in Canada, but down here in SC a good timing and balance belt change runs about $500 to $600. I'd shop around a little more on that job.

Around here you can get the belts and idlers changed for about $600.

But this does not include the seals, nor the water pump, nor the $125 follow up charge to retension the belts.

I'm in the same boat. A 1984 944 that has a solid good body but hasn't been driven in at least a year for 1500. Around here a good 944 will cost 7k there abouts. So I might look into this.

I saw a Carrera GT go at auction for GBP 184,000. Previous owner dinged the front and rear quarters. They estimated only GBP 80,000 - 130,000 to get it back to as-new...

Nice weekend project for you timstar92404?

now now Khal, no poking fun, your stick isnt sharp enough

Tim, many of us have said this before and will continue to say it. Until you have a MUCH MUCH bigger pocket book, stick the the 924 NA,

as you said you dont have the $1600,
so the car would just sit around for half a year or more collecting dust while you tried to scrape together funds.
and yes he is correct in the Vancouver BC area the CHEAPEST you will get the belt done is about $1500 and if you take it to a shop that knows what they are doing of you need to replace any extra parts, ie camshaft housing seal, cam gear, then it will VERY quickly rise to over $2k which is something you cannot afford, and one other issue is that if they quote you $1500 you had better have $2500 in the bank ready if anything goes wrong, and you have better have over $1k just sitting there incase something down the road goes wrong and you need the car.

There is one other thing that I would like to mention to you as well Timstar,
Unless you have the money in pocket (or bank) dont even bother calling the seller as you are WASTING his time,

I suggest that you really go back and REREAD all the other posts that you have made about a 944, and actually try to retain some of the info, as it seems like it is going right in one ear and out the other.

Sorry, couldn't resist

timstar92404, despite what the others are saying (and my little jibe), I say go look at the car. You never know when you're going to find a bargain!

Canadian prices seem to be similar (only a little lower, in general) to here. So $1,600 for a 944 in excellent condition is insanely cheap! (providing all it needs is a front-end service )

You might, just might, find yourself with a real winner on your hands...

The Carrera GT's 15,000 mile service is over $12,000! It has 4 camshafts and all 4 have to be removed for a valve adjustment. In order to do this the motor must be pulled!

I couldn't see the car today because the guy said the car is stored somewhere else and he would have to come down and get it.

I could borrow a little money to pay for the car but I would have to park it for a few months until I sell my current car and save a little money to get all the maintenance done.

but I really don't like borrowing money especially for a old car its not really necessary to get another car I just like the 944.

the reason I'm looking for another car is that I'm dumping alot of my money into my 924 and it has never ending problems because its older than a 944 and also not in the best condition. all the money I spend on my 924 could be used to maintain a 944 in better condition.

For example I have a bad exhaust leak and I have to get my entire exhaust replaced and thats going to cost at least 500 dollars or maybe more. and also various other things.

1600 for a good condition 944 is very cheap here even when needing belt service.

944s here are 4000-8000 and the cheaper ones usually have not records and have problems.

I know the smart thing to do would be to wait until I'm out of university before buying another car but I'v wanted a 944 for so many years now kinof hard to wait another 3-4 years.

who actually spends 12 grand after 15k for maintenance...

sounds like its cheaper ot maintain a v12 than the 4cyl.
