I have a 1977 924, and it doesnt seem to want to start..it doesnt turn over at all in fact. I read my car book and it said where the starter was and how to take it out. i took a look at it and realized the exaust was in the way of taking off the starter shroud..do i need to take the exaust out before removal of the motor or exaust?

thanks, Gary

you can get the starter out without taking the exhaust out. but it is tricky, and it is easier to remove the exhaust

Getting the exhaust off a RHD car looks tricky too. I'm about to start getting my starter off. Looks a fun job, especially with the oil filter in the way..

if you get the heat shield/shroud off the car then it's not too bad, you'll need a couple of extentsion bars and uni-joints on a socket set to get at the top bolt. The bottom bolt is easy to get at. Had my starter out a few times, it is tight in there but really not bad.

I need to replace my starter very soon also as its getting worse. lots of times it just clicks instead of engaging.

I don't really like getting under the car for a long time so if its hard to remove I might just buy the starter and get a shop to do it.

what would the labour be to replace a starter, I'm guessing it wouldn't take more than one hour.

Took mine out originally to be re-conditioned as it was sticking. Then a few months later I had a problem with the wiring to the alternator and starter so I pulled it again to give me some room to play under there while re-wiring. Pulled it again when we changed the engine last year.

It's really an easy job apart from the problem of getting your hands into the limited space, I've had much worse starter removal jobs on other cars.
