... jus wonder how many of you are familiar with
the folks that brought us the weekend..unionized
labor. I just rejoined my local union as a interior/ exterior
specialist. Heres my take on it.. I was told it wasnt gonna
cost anything though I ended up having to pay $130.00
to try & finish my apprenticeship Im at 75 percent right now.
It was Ok I got a job right away. Though they had more than one
job..I was told mine would last about 4 weeks mine lasted 3. so as of
last thursday I was laid off. to bad I was getting used to 20 bucks an
hour with a 2 dollar an hour worked trust fund and bennies. Though
the good news is Im 13 on a list of 27 out of work workers.
... .The best way to get a job is going in person in the morning to the Signatory Contractors' offices and filling out an application.
The majority of our dispatches are “name requests” – meaning that most members find their own work. So Im calling and faxing alot..
hitting the pavement in the porsche going to jobs...theres some
interesting jobs.. big 17 story condo jobs getting started & other existing jobs, schools, malls, & federal buildings.
I think I might go to las vagas next year. somewhere with a strong

Unions are good and bad, depending on who's involved.
I worked a union job where I was getting $12.57 an hour and having to pay $50 a month in dues. Now I work a non union job where I make $15 an hour and no dues... The union job had some sweet perks, like dental and such, but the actual union did NOTHING for the employees.
My mom was instrumental in getting a union into her workplace, yet when the employer made an enemy of all the pro union employees, they wouldn't even write a letter... She ended up being forced out of her job, through intimidation and abuse.
That being said, I know of several unions in my area that bend over backwards for their guys, and have helped them through some tough times.
You can argue about the semantics of whether unions are a good or bad thing, but I think it's really a case specific thing... There are good employers, and there are some really rotten employers. There are good employees, and there are the types who will use whatever they can get their hands on, unions included, to weedle whatever they can out of their employer. There are good unions that take care of their employees, and those who couldn't care less, and are full of corrupt scum.

Well, having spent my working life in management, here is my cut on it. If you don't have a union, the company will take advantage of you. If you do have a union, the union will take advantage of you. It's human nature. So, you just can't win. But, you have to eat, so you have to play the game where it's at. Take what's available, union or not, and always look out for yourself over the union and the company. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |
