|
|
Hello,
I recently bought a 1980 924. I've started hearing a low fequenzy noice when I turn the steeringwheel to the right. This is only audiable when I'm driving around 70 km/h and upwards. When I'm driving slowly it sounds fine. I'm also getting some shaking in the steeringwheel at higher speeds.
What wrong with my car? Any ideas? |

Shaking of the steering wheel at higher speeds could be a wheel balance probelm, any tire shop will be able to diagnose.
The low frequency noise when turning, I'm not sure about, more detail around what it sounds like may help.
By the way, the folks here generally like to know where people are from, so you might want to update your profile. There might me a board member in your hometown. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Thanks for answering. I've updated my profile now.
The sound is a low frequenzy hum that feels in the entire car, and it starts as soon as I turn the wheel just a little bit to the right, and it doesn't get more intense if I turn the wheel more to the right. So, it's like on-or-off. |

Hmmm, OK, with that information someone should be able to come up with some ideas.
Board member "Racing" is from Gothenbrug Sweden and has lots of 924 knowledge, you might want to send him a private message as well. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

I'm suspecting a loose wheel bearing; at least tighten, best to repack and inspect to see if it needs replacement. Jack up each corner, see if the wheel feels loose by wiggling front-to-back and side-to-side by hand. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Something bent and rubbing in the wheel well?
(Sounds a bit rude, doesn't it?)
I'd check the bearings first - but wouldn't they growl in a L/H turn as well? _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

Problem solved!
It was the wheel bearings that were bad. I changed both of them on the left front wheel, and now everything works and sounds perfect.
Thanks everyone |

Another solution would be to stop turning.
I thought for a moment it was a power steering problem with fluid being low. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I am just about to change my rotors and replacing the bearings at the same time.
I just wish the bearing mob would give me the right ones. They keep giving me the ones for the turbo. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

| I used the same bearings that VW use on most older models ie. front wheel bearings for WV beetle. |

You might want to do the right bearings as well. It's best to do both sides at the same time. You might find the right ones fairly close behind in wear. Jack up the car and grab the front wheel at the top and bottom, then push and pull the wheel. Any click indicates the bearing's on its way out. Side to side checking won't tell you enough about the bearing.
That said, for some reason my 944 seems to wear out l/f bearings faster than r/f. _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

Hey Ozzie, I have new inner and outter wheel bearings for a 4 bolt setup sitting at home, and would be willing to sell them cheaper than you would be able to get them for even with shipping. make me an offer in a PM _________________ 3 928s, |
