My 931 spoiler is getting pretty old, and is fairly porous and spongelike at this point, so I'm looking at options to make it waterproof, and hopefully black and glossy.
Who has had good experience in reconditioning their spoilers, and what have you guys used?
I'm thinking that Meguirs "Back to Black" would be fine for getting it to look nice, but I want to stock it from being a sponge, since it gets very heavy when wet. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

I have had three 931 spoilers in my hands and all of them were spongelike. Try to get a 924S spoiler if you can. Might be better. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I was thinking some sort of latex based sealer might be the trick here. If it's porous and absorbs water, it should be able to absorb a flexible paint too, at least on the surface.
Just a few thoughts to kick around... Anyone recommend anything that fits the bill here, flexible, stick to rubber, that kinda thing?
Also, is regular paint thinner safe to use on teh rubber? I have a spare spoiler in ratty condition, so I can use it for a test bed for this. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Are you planning on painting it? I used some autmotive glaze to fill small holes on some rubber honey-comb wheels for a '71 GTO, and it worked out beauitfully, but the trick is you have to paint it. _________________ Gone: 1981 silver 924 w/ black int. and a 5 speed. |

i read that link and there is a black rubberized flexible bondo. we used it on a couple of vettes in the body shop, but ill be dammed if i could remember the name. it is very rubbery but i dont know how it would react with the spoiler. ive gone with the fiberglass approach but ive only gotten as far as taking off the spoiler and cleaning it up.........i gotta get off my ass _________________ wonder what this button does.......oh! |

You might try SMC. I use it for mounting rear flares and such.
This is the stuff I have. About $25 for the size shown.
It comes in black too which is good for ease of finish on the spoiler. Sands out a little tougher than lightweight bondo but still capable of a nice smooth finish.
I have a POS 931 spoiler I may just have to cream up and see how it goes. |

that smc stuff sounds like kitty/gorilla hair (bondo with fiberglass strands chopped into it) and if it is you paid too much. _________________ wonder what this button does.......oh! |

Well, when I restored my first spoiler, I purchased a can of tire black from JC Whitney. It is a rubber paint that is designed for brushing, but can be sprayed. However, I would think that bumper paint, available at any autoparts store, would work also. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |
