I have a tranny that has been sitting around my shop for a wile. I put it on the bench yesterday and noticed that when I turned one axel the other turned the same direction. This happens if it is in or out of gear. It is a 5 speed out of an 80 931. I found these #’s on it;
477 301 102 AA MB
931 301 301 OR
M6K
I was going to bust it open and check the internals for wear. Then maybe keep it or the parts from it as spares for my 931. The tranny that is in the car is different, when one wheel is turned the other turns the opposite direction.
Would the assumption that the one on the bench is an LSD be correct? _________________ 1980 931

| A stock 931 snailshell tranny has 12 as the last 2 numbers of its serial number. |

Where do I find the serial number? I assumed it would be on a plate attached to the unit but found no plate present. _________________ 1980 931

You've listed it above.
Someone may have converted your tranny. |

Those look like part numbers above.
A '79-'80 USA/Japan 5-speed 931 "G31/02" transmission's serial number should be "31 02 00001" - the last 5 digits being the manufacturing sequence number. The same transmission with a factory installed LSD would have "(12)" added to the end of the serial number, so would look like - "31 02 00001 (12)". _________________ "..it's made in Germany. The serial number is stamped in to the bottom of the center rib of the trans. You will see an area directly on the bottom of the rib, that has been groung flat. Clean all of the grease off of it, and there is your serial number. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

Serial # 31024404/12
So I guess it is an LSD.
My car is stock, so I would imagine I wouldn’t notice any difference by installing it.
Is there much call for these? _________________ 1980 931
