guys, as a bug nut and ex 924 owner I will let you know that a VW type 3 rear hub will bolt up to the 924 drum location. we do it for bugs to increas rear braking power. Then take a 914 4lug disk and it will mate up. Redrill for better pattern. OR use the bug wheel pattern and nab some super beetle front rotors for the front to change the pattern. rims for bugs are cheap.
I was getting ready to do this to mine ................. then someone offered me way too much for my 78 924. |

To Andrew NZ: sorry but the pictures of your conversion from drums to discs are not available. Could you post them again ?
Sounds interesting but I would like to see it...

Hi, they're still going strong about 5000km's on (including mainly tough competition miles). I've sent you a PM. _________________ Andrew

O.K. guys, I'm starting to get confused on what 4 bolt patterns everybody else has. my '82 924 is a direct vw 4x130 bolt. rims are 4 bolt spiderweb alloy. I replaced the whole rear brake system by taking pt. #'s off old parts and ordering off internet vw catalogs. I keep seeing posts that the 4 bolt pattern is 4x108 audi. this is not the case on my '82. I fact I have used my spiderweb 6x15" on my son's 74" super beetle to find out how wide of new fenders to get for his bug(direct fit). Since I am the second owner of this 924 and it was a good friend of mine's mom's car i know it's complete history. this is the way it originally came. so is there different 4 bolt patterns or what? _________________ 1982 924 NA 85K owned since 1992

that is a very very good question.
If your car is a 4x130 pattern then you get to use bug rear drums and the path to upgrade to bug type rear disk would not lead you to a machine shop for bolt pattern change. HHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM..........

Hey anyone in Dallas change out their rear wheel cylinders yet, I need an old (dead) one for measurements. |

But why would you want to spend that much money to stay with the bug 4-bolt pattern, when the cost of used 944 rear brakes parts is similar, or lower at many self-serve salvage yards?
You can rebuild the 5-bolt rear calipers cheap and easy enough, and the parts quality is going to be better than that of some third-world manufactured generic bug brake parts, even is the bug parts are new.
And you still have to deal with the hoses and rigid brake lines, and the parking brake cables. Go the 944/931 rear brake route, and it's a stright bolt-on. You also get access to all the 5-bolt Porsche pattern wheels and off-sets.
And what about the actual size of the brake pads, replacement brake pads, and replacement rotors? Where do you get them from, if you go the custom bug parts route, and how much will they cost you? |

Don't forget the cost of a set of wheels to match the bolt pattern. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

no those are bbs mine are porsche factory made by enkei. I'll take some pics of them and post.
and about the cost factor it cost me(w/ friends wholesaler disc.) only $250 for all new rear drum parts(I rebuilt the wheel cylinders w/ rebuild kit). the cost for new wheels, and the parts for conversion would probably been $2K or more for all 4 corners. _________________ 1982 924 NA 85K owned since 1992
