So after driving on the highway I pulled into my parking spot at work only to notice the engine idling very poorly. Turned it off to find oil leaking out of the air filter canister. I know this has to be bad but does anyone have any guesses how bad?

It is an 82 turbo. I have records from the last owner showing a rebuitl turbo and engine rebuild parts that are only a couple of years old.

I think I am going to be sick!

The crankcase breather vents into the airbox and some amount of oil there is normal. If the air-oil seperator is functioning properly, it should be sending oil vapour to the airbox. Some of that recombines along the way and you get what should be a small amount of oil in the airbox. Too much as you seem to be getting, could be caused by a clog somewhere in the breather system (a blocked return line to the sump for instance could result in more oil being sent to the airbox - or a blocked breather might be causing oil to be pushed up the return line into the air-oil seperator, then on to the airbox). Something along those lines or excessive blow-by (or both together) could be causing more oil to be sent to the airbox. Do a compression test to see if excessive blow-by's a contributing factor.

I am having the same problem. The car idles rough. It seems that this car has had this problem for a while. Oil buildup up 1/4 inch on air filter housing. It is missing one v-belt on the engine. The belt looks like it goes to the pump that is located below the airbox to another pump located in the upper center of the engine. Could this be some type of emissions system that has been disconnected? Is this causing the problem?

In town and at highway speed I do not have a problem diving it. Any help would be great.

Oil in the air filter housing on a normally aspired 924 engine is almost always a sign of a heavily worn/worn-out engine. The crankcase ventilation system dumps crankcase air into the air cleaner to be burned to remove combustion gases from the crankcase. Blowby from the rings, and worn valve stem seals help create oil vapor which is sucked up into the air filter housing.

The rough running engine would also signal worn rings.

You should do a compression check. I think you will find that the compression is too low in one of more of the cylinders.

The car had a low battery voltage. Charge up the battery and the car ran smoothly. Does it have some type of computer or sensors which are affected by voltage? I know new cars are very touchy on voltage levels.

IXLOR8 - '77 924's got transistor electronic ignition - not a whole lot in the form of computer, sensors and whatnot at that point, but any ignition would be affected by low voltage and put out inconsistent weak spark.
