I think this car is a great deal! I talked with a guy who sells them in New York last summer and he gave me what I consider to be the truth about them.
$19,999 US {eBay car} the big difference between it and the real car is this body is pretty much all fiberglass and a "custom built" 1915cc VW Performance Engine but it should weigh about 400 - 500 lbs less than the original.
The rest of these photos:

He said, "they aren't for driving in the winter, rain or poor road conditions and should be stored indoors."
I asked about repairs and maintenance and he said "everything is new and should last but these aren't mass produced there can be bugs and we will look into any claims about consistant problems".
I also asked about the stats for 1/4 mile and top speed. He said "if they are rated at a certian number, I would expect them to reach those numbers but to race these cars would be a mistake. The will deteriorate just like a race car would. If you take care of the car like intended, they should last and wear like any other car."
What do you guys think of the car above? |

Although I'm hugely impressed with some of the replicas people are able build, I've never really liked the idea. Some are actually better than the original but I'd know I was driving around in a fake. And having a fake Porsche, I'd just feel like a bit of a wanker.
There's only one or two I'd consider buying. Certainly a Lotus 7 copy (like a Westfield or PBR Clubman, etc...) would be one I'd consider. Another would be a GT40. But I'd want it for track work, not to drive around town in. And I'd never pretend to anyone, even myself, that it was the real deal.
That being said, I've seen some replica 356 Speedsters that are just incredible. And my brother showed me a replica Lamborghini Diablo selling on ebay in the 'States that was all but impossible to tell apart from the real thing... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Why?
Because, if your going to buy a replica, which is a fake, its like buying a folex, it should last longer than the real thing, and work better! For half the price, Why? Because it isnt the real thing...

Hey, if it's a good replica, why not. And that looks like a good replica.
I'm with Khal on the GT40 (the original one), one of my favourite all-time cars. I can't believe Ford made that car and I can't believe that I didn't buy one when they were only $200,000 If you want one. go here http://www.roaringforties.com.au/ superb quality and slightly cheaper that a real one.
Now a Porsche 906 replica that actually looked like the real thing, that would be something.

I don't like the idea but that looks like a nice replica but still. Its like getting a Pony cd player with fanasonic batteries ( saw them in an asian store). _________________ 78 924 sold.

I first talked to Beck in 1982 and the car cost was about 7K for the kit.
I think they are the nicest looking of all the kit cars. It is usually in the top 3 in any survey.
I would buy one but the bank manager says no. [insert wife here]. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Good answers guys. And I wasn't thinking about you guys driving around pretending they were real. If some one asks, tell them the deal.
As for a track car, I wouldn't really look for a replica anything. Just buy the best car I could find. Chances are if you call it a "track car" you'll run it hard all of the time and even crunch it from time to time, so a replica wouldn't do much for you there.
As fore me, I think the 550 Spyders look perfect and that's why I would consider buying the replica of it. If anyone asks, I'll tell them anout the car and why they should consider it too.
Besides, who would want to shell out $600,000US for a real one!?!? I wouldn'd dare drive it on city roads. |
