|
|
Has anyone measured the intake temperature on a 931 ? I'm installing (finally) my intercooler and yesterday I got an a-pillar gauge pod,air/fuel gauge and a two channel intake air temp gauge. One channel for before and one for after the i/c.Just curious as to what I should expect for degrees coming out of the turbo. Also i'm thinking of adding a water and/or alcohol injector right into the turbo side of the i/c on a pressure switch to help keep the i/c fins clean of oil from the turbo and to cool down the intake charge.Has anyone got any experience with this ?Is it worth my time and $ to add the water ?TIA,Leigh. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

it depends a lot on the ambient air temp, but I bet you will be amazed, how hot the intake air really is without intercooler (150-250 C) _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Looks like you've been to this thread before, but following some of the links Smoothie posted is definitely worthwhile. I've read them several times, and I'm definitely planning to put a water/methanol injection kit on my 931 during the engine rebuild.
The one thing that stood out from Smoothie's post relative to your question was a warning about injecting the water before the turbo, as it could possibly damage the fins. According to what he wrote, his was not damaged, but you might think twice about what point you want to inject. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I wouldn't put it before the turbo itself but rather after the turbo, before the i/c.Into the side of the i/c unit itself actually, into the end tank so the water would be spraying directly onto the bar and plate internals of the i/c.This way any oil from the turbo would be washed away from the i/c leaving it clean. This,in my opinion, would help it retain the maximum possible heat exchanging property.
I used to rebuild propellers from small fixed wing aircraft and it never ceased to amaze me just how much damage water would do to a solid 45 lb. chunk of hardened aluminum. The props i'm talking about were off of float planes like a beaver or twin otter etc.and just the spray mist from take off just destroys the leading edges. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

ah yes, that location makes sense to me. I'll have to take a look at how this might work with my setup. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

What sort of i/c set up are you going to use ? _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

Don't you worry i'll post plenty of pics. The first ones will be of the J pipe and the exhaust pipe that goes between the turbo itself and the cat.I've had my welder friend cut out a section of each and weld in a stailess steel braided flex piece. This should help alieviate some of the stress on the exhaust manifold so it won't crack. That's the theory anywho.
However, since my computer wizard Lizard is gone to the northern wasteland, I don't have the skills to post pics myself.I will email them to someone that can though.Any volunteers ? _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive
