the car grinds when shifting from 1 to 2.
it rarely does this when shifting to 1 or 3 .
I can still get into 2 without grindingif I push the pedal really hard and hold it down for a sec longer.....
is this probably due to the clutch not being adjusted correctly or something? _________________ 78 924 sold.

it sounds like the syncro's are going in your gearbox. at least thats what happened when my saab did that. i think there are some previous posts on this, you should check the forum for them, as im sure they have all been answered.

Yeah, search that one, there have been a lot of question like your and many different descriptions, you'll find your answers in the search function for sure on this one.
P.S. It sounds like syncro's to me too. |

but if I push the clutch it harder so it all the way to the end then it won't grind but when I shift quickly it does that .....
maybe I should make the play on the clutch less..
won't grinding it so many times cause bad damage?
also I did something really stupid yesterday. I drove the car with teh emergency brake still on for like 1 minute out of the parking lot onto the street.....
did I damage my brakes really badly? _________________ 78 924 sold.

Change slower..these gearboxes are pretty 'agricultural' and you won't get them to shift as fast as some modern boxes. Your car is about 25 years old, and getting tired.
Doubt if you did any damage to your brakes.. _________________ '82 924 NA Euro (hers)

| When was the last clutch change? Did the gear grinding and the clutch thing start to happen at the same time? I always depress the clutch all the way to the floor. |

I replaced my clutch cable myself but the distance between the lever and mounting part is not as it should be on the haynes manual but the clutch play seems to be right .......
maybe I just need to get my clutch adjusted and the cable readjusted.
thats the highes I could pull the cable by hand but the distance is still too great....
and I have no idea when the clutch was replaced could be original clutch. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I replaced the clutch cable as the pedal was getting stuck half way and shit and was extremely heavy.
now its still heavy but doesn't get stuck and is a little lighter but still very heavy compared to new cars. _________________ 78 924 sold.

it sounds as though the clutch really isnt what is important in this situation. when a syncro goes, you can still get it to synch with the clutch, you just have to wait, or as some people i think call it, double clutch. i have to do this sometimes when im putting it into reverse. i guess, as my friend explained it to me, what happesn when you double clutch, you're turning the synchro on, and then turning it off, so it stops spinning. which then allows you to put it into gear.

Agreed. It's almost certainly the synchromesh on 2nd gear.

Yep, that's pretty much the only solution unless you want to replace the synchro on 2nd.
Up to you but I've been told it's not really worth doing if the gearbox is still working OK i.e. you can "still get into 2 without grinding if I push the pedal really hard and hold it down for a sec longer..."
By the way, you don't have to "push the pedal really hard". It's the pause between shifting out of and then into gear that is important.
I've been told the gearbox will survive for a long time if you just take it easy when shifting, particularly into 2nd gear.

Good idea to "double clutch" or "double declutch" or whatever you wanna call it. Technically, it doesn't actually stop or start the synchro spinning but instead matches the speed of the rotating parts of the gearbox for the gear you wish to select to the speed of the input shaft being driven by the engine.

Again, you must shift slowly when you synchro's start to wear out!

I often shift from 1 to 3 to 5 when I'm not in a hurry.
Or sometimes I start in second run it up to 5000 and shift to fifth.
Been doing this for more than 20 years.... |

Do you do this only to spare the gearbox? |

| When you're not in a hurry, there's no need to use all the gears, or maybe I'm just getting lazy. |

Nah, time for higher speed limits!
Most of our cars can start in second and hit the speed limit before shifting to 5th, so why bother with 3rd and 4th?
The 986 can burn rubber starting in second and redlines at about 72 mph... |
