Waste Gate modification???

So I recently bought a 924 Turbo , The guy who sold it to me said something was wrong with the wastegate. Took it to shop and they pulled it out only to see it was disconnected. After openeing it up it appears to have been gutted with a bolt put in place of the baffle to keep it shut.

Any clue as why one would do this. I am guessing to increase perfromance but wouldn't that harm the engine donw the raod?

The one and only reason would be if an aftermarket turbo with an internal wastegate was installed. Otherwise, you have no limit to the boost pressure- this will destroy the turbo and engine in pretty short order.

So I am lucky I took the car to a shop to look it over, not so lucky that I did not do that prior to buying it though. Is there an aftermarket version that will bolt on? This one is gutted so at least it will the insided. Any place besides going back to Porsche for parts?

It looks like the prev owner replaced the core of of the turbo (k-26) and had the engine rebulit, I have wonder if he did not know that it was messed with when he bought it in 99.

You would notice not having a wastegate pretty quickly- unless the turbo was not spinning at all during all that time. I can't imagine the engine would last more than a couple full throttle passes. The boost would rocket up to ~25psi or so and the engine would detonate and blow the headgasket very quickly.

Anyway, you can find wastegates on ebay sometimes. I think they go in the ~$130 range? It's the same wastegate as the 930 too. You could also solicit board members here in the wanted section. I'm sure someone has one lying around.

PS- just to double-check, what do you mean by the "baffle"?

Only if the overboost switch has been bypassed. Otherwise around 16psi is the limit before it cuts the fuel pumps.

The wastegate was stuck closed on my '80 when I first got it. Previous owner said that the overboost switch was bad so he grounded the wire to make it driveable. I found out what the problem really was when I hooked up a boost gauge and went for a test drive. I watched the needle start to move at a little over 2000rpm, then almost instantly peg a 25psi gauge before I could even lift my foot. Now, if it could only run like that without destroying the engine...

Thanks for all the info. The car had a bad cold start issue which is why I took it to the shop in the first place. The mechanic thought it was much faster than it should have been! I am just hoping that the last owner did not drive it hard like that and caused damage. I guess I will find that out soon enough. Now I need a wastegate thanks to the hair brain idea.

Sorry, meant to say diaphram instead of baffle. They took that and the spring out and replaced it with a screw/bolt thing. There was also some goofy wiring done that casued the cold start issue so I am hoping they did not make the wastegate problem worse.

Thanks , I will keep the board updated once I get it fixed and see if I just bought a nightmare or not.

Did I miss something, or have you confirmed that there is not an aftermarket turbo installed???

The last owner gave me a stack of receipts for things he bought, found one from majestic turbo for a K-26 cartridge. He spent $500.00 for it. Everything looks to be Porshe. I am new to Porsches so please bare with me on this learning curve. Does it sound stock? I did call Majestic and told them about the wastegate issue and they were dumb founded as to why he would have done that. So far this stuff is killing my budget! I still need to have body work and paint done next.

Okay some more info I found in the stak of papers, A note on the back of the bill says turbo is from a 944, water cooled, Would these match? I thought they were air cooled? Not sure if this was just a note during the time he was looking for a replacement or for the one that is on the car.
