Well, with all the CIS removed and replaced by the EFI, I'll have a great big open space in front of the engine... Easy spot for IC placement? Only concern, of course, is getting enough air to it. I think the only option would be to duct the air from the vents in the nose into it. Any thoughts?

I think you would be better off using that free space for tubing instead of actually placing the intercooler there, unless you were planning on using a water to air intercooler. That might work there.
Otherwise, tilt the inlet of the turbo so it faces more towards the front of the car, then up and route the intercooler pipes right to the front of the car.
Then, build me a EFI kit so I can do the same. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

| Another option might be to collect air underneath the car and blow it up through an IC mounted in your empty space. You could then cut a grill in the hood for the exiting hot air. |

If you get an electric fan you can fit the intercooler in front of the rad by moving the rad back a little.
It gets plenty of airflow.

Simon,
Thats how i am doing mine. If you guy's can wait a couple of weeks, i will post the pictures of my I/C. It's a 951 unit, but heavily modified at the inlet and outlet areas. This will sit directly in front of the radiator, with a 2100 cfm fan behind the rad pulling the air through both units. |

bass gt-
I presume you've pulled out the AC condensor in front of the rad though? I'm still interested to see what you come up with!
I think that with some creative sheetmetal ducting and two mini fans behind the IC pulling air through it, it can be a pretty efficient placement. It keeps the lines a bit shorter too- always a plus.

Nick,
This is a track car, so no A/C, in fact not much of anything!! I am weighing up the options at the moment regarding fans. One choice is to have 2x 200mm diam fans located sie by side down low , the other is to have one 370mm diam fan located cantrally. The bigger fan gives about 130% more airflow, around 2200/2300 cfm IIRC, compared to the 480 cfm for each of the small fans. It's a big difference, and the current consumption is about the same at 12A.
Once the I/C is back, i will post some pics along with the rest of the car, so you can see how she is coming along.
I've nearly finished painting the interior, so i'm just waiting for the cage to arrive. Then it's in with that and the F/G doors!! Should be interesting when she goes on the scales.
Regards,
Steve |

So, I've read a bunch of posts on different locations for the intercooler. I know at least one other board member has one mounted in a similar location to mine (same Holbert Racing-style setup).
Is there any significant advantage over my current setup to moving the intercooler to the nose area? Seems like with proper venting in the valance this setup should be good enough to get into the ~15 PSI range.
Based on all I've read, I'm thinking I'll just replace that stupid accordian style hose with a better hose into the charge tube and be happy with the setup as it is...seems like moving to the nose will require too much fabrication, particularly since I already have a somewhat functional configuration. However, I'd like opinions. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

ideola, my intercooler is in the same spot as yours however with all steel pipes and no accordian. I think the airflow to the intercooler in that spot with the stock front bumper is minimal at best.
Maybe with your bodykit it would be a tad better. I plan on moving to nose mount IC after the clear headlight conversion though - there would be no wondering about how much airflow you are getting with that setup. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

yeah, I could see having it there with stock bumper would almost pointless. Seems like the Holbert Racing valance does direct a fair amount of air to that location though...just wondering if all the effort to rework the plumbing would be worth it...
Definitely plan to replace the stupid accordian hose with a correct solution. No doubt I'm getting all kind of leakage all along that stupid thing. When I first picked up the car, I had no idea about any of that stuff, and the accordian hose was barely attached to the charge tube. In retrospect, I'm lucky I got the car home...it was leaking very bad and burning so rich it fouled the plugs to the point I almost didn't make it. live and learn _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
