Ok everyone, I have decided with this Franco Automatic Cam Gear ( http://thorin.adnc.com/~figf/ ) I am going to switch to a distributorless ignition system. My only option at this time is the distributorless ignition setups from http://www.electrimotive-inc.com
The reason to get rid of the distributor is because the ignition distributor is driven off the back of the camshaft - and the camshaft now adjusts it's timing during the REV process.
One solution I did look into is a recurve, but I feel for my purposes and all the money that has been dropped into this car it would be best to get the most power with a computerized-distributorless ignition system
Any one else have one on their car or am I again the first of the 924 breed to do so?

what's electromotive's pricing on the crank-angle trigger kit (chopper + sensor) and on the ignition "computer"?
You need some sort of crank trigger, of course. I'm just wondering how the cost of the ignition controller compares with a full programmable EMS.
Might be bullet-biting time 'cause I'll bet that once the ignition is sorted out you'll start thinking about electronic injection and air-flow monitors.
To boldly go where no other 924 has gone. |

I got Electromotive's catalog...it depends on what you want. The prices seem to range, recalling from memory, from circa $500 US for a mere box to $2500 for box(s) plus throttle body injection to $YouDonnaWannaKnow for box(s) plus say tuned port injection.
What is the verdict on the Franco cam gear? Do I get a cam ground or just buy the gear? Which is the best bet Jon?

best bet after the Franco cam gear is PLAN on at the min. recurving the distributor... My distributor is the pre 77.5 one... look what it does with the franco gear... that's why you'll have to play with the ignition curve..
BEST BET- go distributorless!
RPM Advance
Idle (~1000 RPM) 10
1500 18
2000 23
2500 25
3000 26
3500 28
4000 22
4500 19
5000 ` (not recorded)
5500 ` (not recorded)
My plan is the $500-$600 one for this summer... There is the fancy one which is laptop programmable- but I don't have $1400...
ARGH!
The fuel injection + ignition is only $1700
I want to keep my CIS... I don't want to change!
- Jon

Hey Dude, if you want max flexibility, then the distributorless ignition or full engine control is the way to go. But if you want to just fix the problem for a relatively small amount, then check out this: http://www.autospeed.com/A_0828/P_4/article.html
It (the programmable electronic ignition) should allow you to program it to "counter-act" the ignition retard that comes with the cam retard. The cost in the article is in Aussie dollars. Figure half that for US dollars. So, for less than $40 plus shipping you might have a solution to your problem. Sure, you have to put it together, but that's entertainment for some (ie, cheap bastards like me). Go to the sites "Shop" section to order it. |

I'm looking at the original article on the ignition kit from the June and July '99 Silicon Chip mags.
The bulk of the work is done by a PIC controller so the kit is bascially just the PIC and a few passive components. The magic is in the software.
For info on the kit go to http://www.jaycar.com.au hit the "Online Shopping" link and then enter "KC5202" in the Jaycar Cat. Number box and hit the search button under that.
I'll scan the first part of the magazine article and post the address when I'm done. |

OK, take a look at http://database2.planb.com.au/peter/sc/ and take a look at the first part of the article.
No comments about the very ordinary scans, I did them in a rush on a windoze 98 pc with no proper software.
If anyone is interested I can scan the second part of the story. |
