Them'd be digits 4-6 on an '81-'82 USA, Canada, Japan 924 or 931. For '81-'82 ROW cars, 4-6 would be "ZZZ" (unused). The "AA0" is "Filling code or VDS code for USA and Canada versions". I hope you know what "Filling code or VDS code" is because I don't.
Aren't you going to ask what the "N" means?...that's at least mildly interesting. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Huh? Oh yeah the N - glad you asked, I happen to know. No need to bite though! It's the place of production - Neckarsulm. (That looks strange so I'm only 80% sure it's spelt(sp?) right.)
Of course you already knew digits 1-3, "WPO" = world manufacturer code. "W" apparently for "World" and "PO" obviously Porsche.
Dig. 7-8 "92" or "93" combine with the 12th digit "4" or "1" to indicate vehicle type.
Dig. 09 test code
Dig. 10 model year (B=81, C=82, D=83, E=84, F =85)
Dig. 11 place of prod.
Dig. 12 last digit of vehicle type
Dig. 13 code for body type and engine ("0"=ROW;"5"=USA,Canada,Japan)
Dig. 14-17 serial number _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
