I am looking at buying an 85 audi with a 5cyl. 5 speed to put into my 79 924 2.0 non turbo. Will i need anything other than the parts from the two cars to make the swap and does anyone know if the trannys would be the same or at least the same bolt pattern. If they are not the same would one be better than the other to have in it for performance. The Porsche has a 5 speed also.

I don't have answers to your questions although I think the tranny bolt pattern is the same.

I do however, drive an '86 4000 Quattro CS and often wonder about this conversion.

I think it would probably be one of the easier swaps, although the 5 cyl. block comes further foward and the radiator may need to be moved to the left side like it is in the Audi. In fact, you may need the radiator and fan to make it work.

The 5 cylinder Audi is a much smoother engine, with good torque. Horsepower is 115, just like the late 924's, but it pulls better. Not sure what the h.p. of the 5000 series is. It also runs on regular and has more advanced engine management like spark retard for knocks and pings.

The tranny has weak synchros like the 924, and I think it is almost exactly the same transmission as the 016/9 5 speed (not snailshell)
Except...I can lock up the axle to get out of lousy situations, but you are not really suppose to drive very far or fast that way. Kind of a part-time positraction.

I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche had this engine in mind as a upgrade for the 924, but went instead to the true Porsche 924's/944 engine.

Would be glad to take measurement if needed.


Oh yeah, the Audi goes really cheap.
