Posted: Fri Feb 25, 2005 3:57 am Post subject: Causes of slow cranking. |
|
|
I'm finishing up my 924 rebuild, and unfortunately, the engine cranks very slowly.
The knowns:
-Battery is good. It will crank my Volvo to no end. Good voltage, did a load test on it, and passes with no problem. Tried my new S2 battery as well with no success.
-Engine spins freely and has pressure. Tested this by hand, and it spins like butter.
-Ignition timing is within a degree or two.
The iffy:
-I have an adjustable cam timing wheel and it has a couple of marks. I know i'm at least within a tooth or two.
-Starter is new, but has been sitting for a long time outside (2 years?)
Any help is greatly appreciated. _________________ Now:

Forgot to mention that the alternator belt isn't hooked up yet, I've been trying to just start it on the battery.
Can't seem to find a belt the right size... _________________ Now:

The alternator belt is a 10A890 (10mm width, 890mm length). The Bosch catalogue says they make this belt, but I can't source one in Australia so have to get the genuine belt. Others in your neck of the woods will be able to tell you where you can get one from.
Have you checked and cleaned all of the grounding points. That will make a HUGE difference. _________________ TJ

Amen to that....
id also check for corosion on the starter solinoid terminals, and make sure the electrical connectors are on tight and in good repair. sometime those pupies can corrode through and/or break loose.. _________________ Eric

| like everyone else said, your problem is most likely in the ground side of teh circuit. Do an ohms check on the ground side to make sure that there is not excessive resistance |

Problem is mostly remedied. There was excessive resistance in the circuit. Cranks a lot better now.
Should have thought of this first, haven't been on 924board in a while (4-5 months, my account is now inactive), and the S2 has no rust. Forgot that it takes a much different state of mind to work on older cars.
Thank you for your input. _________________ Now:
