How hard would it be to make an 87 924S into a Daily Driver/ Racer? I really like the aspects of light weight and such but I also enjoy other pleasures such as Stereo and A/C. Thanks,

I don't know about racer, but I have an '88 924S that I've outfitted as a DE car with Rollbar, semi raceseat, Bilsteins, lowered, big sway bars, wider tires, stiffer/shorter springs and still have a CD player and AC!!! Big Fun!! I ran about 10 DE days and a bunch of autocross last year and then drove it to work a couple of times a week. I'm just about to sell it, but only because I came across an '87 Turbo that I just couldn't pass up... maybe I'll keep both.... but how do I hide the 924S from my wife??? LOL!!

Im really going into this project open minded. I guess Im looking for advice on what to do to make it a mean track car as well as a (somewhat) comfortable daily driver. I was thinking upgrade suspension and maybe some bigger tires. After that... I don't know what would be best to do. I know the basics of cars in general but am still learning about the porsche's. Im coming from a drifting background (1990 240SX converted to an S13 with SR Motor and alot of extras). Any help would be great! Thanks,

ckiel, I would focus on the suspension right now. It's a lot more fun to have the car handle better. This engine is the weak link in the deal. You could spend hard earned money onlt to find out that your not really going any faster.

My advice is this, if your car has the drum rear brakes look for a donor Porsche 944 suspension and do the upgrade. Or Porsche 931, or 924 Turbo suspension. It bolts right up and it's a simple upgrade to enhance your handling. You get bigger disc brakse in the rear and you can fit the car with larger wheels, etc. We have that set up on both our race cars and we would not race without it. The brakse are unbelivable!

While under the car get the larger sway bars that fit the early Porsche 944's. I think www.944online has them or www.rennbay.com used. You can get away with used stuff here.

Next replace the bushings. Weltmeister has everything you need and Jason at www.paragon-products.com can answer your questions about what's right for you. He races a 944 Turbo and knows of a few of us here. Very helpful and tell him that Jeremy sent you.

Shocks and springs? There is going to be some discussion here about the right set up that's not going to be such a harsh ride. We race with Koni's (yellow) on our race cars. Not the best but economically it made sense to go with them at the time. Now if your looking to spend a little more, go with Bilstein. Vaughan has them on his race car and loves them. Springs: Talk with Jason as Paragon. He has a kit for like $240 that's aftermarket hypercoil spring set up for the front suspension. Most guys will tell you that if you go with 250# front springs you'll be happy. I tend to agree with that if this is also a daily driver. We race with 400# front springs and it's a much stiffer ride.

Finally, torsion bars in the rear. I'm not sure how much you know of them but to get a better handling car you'll need to upgrade them. It's a bitch of a job to replace and not for the faint of heart. The factory torsion bars are like 22-23mm in diameter. Weltmeister makes them all they way up to 36mm. We race with 30MM torsion bars and our cars are really stiff. I do have a set of 28 or 29mm Welmeister torsion bars that I could sell you really cheap. They go for like $300 brand new but I could sell you a set for less than half of that. It's the perfect set up for the street as well because it's not such a harsh ride. sent me a message if your interested in them.

That's my .02 on this anyone else have some suggestions?

In stock form they handle pretty well - a 924S will never be the fastest, or lightest, but is very satisfying on a track.

I'd agree that suspension's the first place to start
http://www.924.org/techsection/SuspensionPreparation.htm

how stiff, how much camber etc.. will depend on the road/track compromise you decide on.

then look at brakes & tyres - better pads for a start, & with 16" wheels the 951 front struts/hubs/calipers will fit - they are tremendously powerful. Soft compound track tyres will also increase you speed as you will have much more cornering grip.
