Hey Guys,
I'm having this strange raw fuel smell. Obviously it smells like petrol but it's not leaking from the fuel filter nor CIS system. All joints are dry and yes, I've put my nose to them.
I can smell some from in the cabin but most strongly when I step out of my door. My car is a RHD, so the moment I step out from the right side, it hits me like a wall of bricks! I haven't tried the left door though...
Also, I don't think it's a case of running too rich. I've smelt my exhaust and it doesn't have that raw fuel smell....
Any ideas?

You recently topped-off, didnt' you? ... The fuel odor is a common complaint, but will probably lessen as the fuel gets used. Best guess is the hoses atop your fuel tank, and/or the large hose joining the filler neck to the tank. I got a really bad raw fuel smell when my accumulator was leaking. The accumulator is at the back right hand corner of the car (the side of the car you get out of). If you look under your car and up high above the fuel pump you should see it, it is a cylinder with 2 fuel hoses attached to its top. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Me too. "Had the smell I should say"..did you know that the sender
seems to only fit one way If you try it any other way all the
bolt holes line up except one. I topped off on monday and had one bolt out
of the sender unit it leaked a little and smelled I fixed it tonight since my cars worken right on agian. Check your sender the VDO letters should be on the top if you look from the back hatch. Also check the nylon rubbermfiller hose for leaks it has clamps on both ends it connects the filler nozzle to the tank. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

From the FAQ section:
Where is that gas smell coming from? When I fill car up at the gas station it smells like gas until I burn off about a quarter tank. Why?
The fuel filler hose goes from the top of the gas tank to the filler cap by way of the passenger compartment. It’s only separated from the passenger compartment by carpet and a plastic cover. Over time the hoses can become cracked, or the hoses can become loose. Pull back the carpet in the trunk and check the clamps for tightness. If no luck, then replace the hoses. Be sure to use hose that is rated for gas and oil.
First place I would look...
Btw, depending on what type of trans you have, it will dictate if you have to remove the trans, to remove the gas tank, to replace the hoses.
If you have a snailshell type trans, you are in luck! |

Even if I'm running low, I still get the smell. It's worst when I'm outside the car. Someone suggested the accumulator. I think that's a good place to start... |

In a good way...you can pull the tank without having to remove the transmission. Easier with a second set of hands, but its possible for one person to remove and reinstall. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Ha!!! This is a good one! Recall my original post said it was a strange smell? Coz I've never smell it that was before. It was real bad when I opened my door.
As it turns out, the fuel hose to the WUR was leaking and I was losing fuel like a tap!
I replaced that section of it and the smell's gone! I love my Carrera!
Funny thing though. I went for a drive, everything good. Then I tried to start the car after 3 hours. I could crank but not start! Got fuel, got spark. (I undid the coil and grounded it and I pressed the CIS air flap with the ignition on. Eeeee sound.)
Anyway, finally started up after 5 mins of cranking. Strange...

The funny thing Paul, is that while I thought it was a residual fuel pressure problem due to say a lousy accumulator or a check valve, I was too lazy to put the CIS test gauge to confirm things. Things are tight under the hood of a GT with the intercooler in the way.
What I do know is that the problem came from my old car becoz I took the fuel distributor from it (after all , the 931 and 937 use the same item) and the problem followed. The old car used to have the exact same symtoms.
If you restart after 5 mins, fine. 10 mins, fine. 30 mins, iffy. An hour? The engine would catch but you gotta be quick and nail the throttle and it will slowly sputter to life and then the engine will run steady.
Now that that FD is in the CGT (took out the original coz I thought that was the cause of my firing on 3 problem, but that turned out to be the ignition leads), the problem presists. Any ideas?
