| could someone please give me some ideas why my heater fan is not going on. I cant figure out why it wont go on, i have read other posts about the heater fan, and they said to spray wd40 or white grease in the bearings, i did that and it freed it up really nice but still the fan wont go on, when the fan lever os switched to on. Itested to see if it was getting juice to the moter and it was. my car is an 81. Let me see, is this right the first lever is the fan control lever, the next one down is the heat control, opens and closes heater valve, and the last one controls the upper and lower heat is this correct or have i got something wrong. Do these moters just go out, because the car only have 30000 miles on it, so i dont think it would be bad already?? what do you guys think,? got any suggestions ? thanks heath |

I would take a look at the wiring/fuse first. All the slider boards I've pulled out have had areas of melting/burn marks. I don't think it was ever the best design. The motors seem to last for quite a long time.
PS- 30k miles? Your odometer wouldn't happen to be broken would it?

The fans have a history of squealing and wearing out. I suspect that if your odometer shows 30,000 miles it is really 130,000 miles, and that age has taken it's toll. Yes, you describe the slide controls correctly, the fan slider is the top one.
The first thing I would do is to check your fuses - I think the fan is on fuse #10 circuit, but check your owners manual. If you have a volt meter in the dash, with the engine off but the key in the "ON" position, slide the thing from off (far left) over to the far right, and if the meter shows a drop, then the fan is getting juice, but it's probably siezed up.
If you have the "R2D2" type of fan, leave the slider pushed over to the far right, remove the fan cover under the hood, turn the key ON and use a pencil or popcicle stick to move the fan blades. If the fan is siezed, this may work it free. If you have the squirrel cage type of fan, I don't know if you can get access to the blower cage.
If the fan blades spin freely when you push them with a stick, then you probably will be forced to pull the center console and chase down your problem. The motor is constantly "on" by design with the key in the "On" position, with the slide control changing the resistance to ground and making it spin faster. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

| ok thanks i will have to try those sugestions, as for the milage the car was a one owner car of a older guy that bought it new and didnt drive it much, it sat outside for 13 years, he died and his son got it, i got it from his son, he was never able to get it going. At least this is what he told me, haha Everything seems really new under dash and stuff, so i dont know? Everything else works really good but the heater, i replaced heater valve, i little more heat but no fan, i will have to check fuse and voltage again. I sure hope i can get it working. i really dont want to have to rip the whole dash apart and everything. Is there anyway to get the moter out from up top?? thanks |

Nope, sorry. The factory manuals say you can pull the heater box without removing the dashboard, but in my opinion it wouldn't be worth the effort to attempt it. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

I had a similar issue happen today... however, I got a neato surprise in the mix...
I just got my 931 running again today after a 2-week lapse (see my post in 931 tech for more details.. maybe you can help out?). Well I attempted to turn on the heater fan, but instead of being greeted with the usual noisy yet anemic airflow, I got NOTHING except a slight drop in voltage. Somehow I forgot to turn off the fan, and whilst working under the hood, I was greted to a small yet smelly whisp of smoking emitting from the fresh air intake.
Do ya think it's fried? Anyone know of an 83-86 944 for parts in the GVRD? I'm thinking that I should use a newer-model airbox rather than go with the gutless and ineffectual one that plagued the 924/931. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

It's a pretty serious process to convert over to the 944 box. Well worth it if you like heat, but a pain nonetheless. Just an FYI. Drop me a line if you plan on doing it, I have a list of all the parts you'll need and some numbers on how much to cut&move the hole in the engine bay shelf.

| ok now my fan just started working today for the first time, very strange, maybe a loose connection or bad ground. But i noticed that the fan only works when i am driving, when i come to a stop it will only be blowing a little, then when i am going it will blow good. Is this how they work, i am not sure because like i said this is the first time it has worked? It seems like maybe a drop in voltege at idle my not put out enough to run good at idle? what do u think? |

if the fan is only working when driving then that means it is needing the extra power from the ALT to work, this means you have corroded connections, dont use the fan until you fix these or you will get too much heat and melt things. start with the ground to the sliding switch,
if that doesnt fix it then you have burnt pins in the connectors that plug into the fuse box.
and yes fuse # 10 is the int fan fuse, _________________ 3 928s, |
