Hello, I just got a '77 924. I have a few questions.

After getting it to start, I tried to put it in reverse to get it out of the garage. When I tried to put it in gear, I got a bad grinding sound. It happened in 1st gear as well.

When the car is not on and I try to put it in gear, it goes in smoothly and easily. Is the clutch the problem? If so, what do I need to do to remedy the situation?

clutch is not disengaging, you can try to adjust it, with the cable, worst case senario is that you have a cracked/broken firewall, which will require you to remove a few items and have the firewall welded up.

So the cable is too loose and must be tightened somehow, correct?

I've never worked on a car with a manual transmission, so this is all new.

You adjust it where the clutch cable attaches to the clutch lever on the side of the bell housing.

You can do this from above, just open the hood. Adjust it so that you have about an inch of free play at the clutch pedal.

sorry if this is a dumb question, how do I actually adjust it? I know where the cable is. There is like 2 or 2.5 inches of free play in the clutch right now, I think that's probably the problem. How exactly do i adjust the cable so that there is less play?

I would say if there is that much play in it then it is either:

1. Broken and needs to be replaced.

2. Has come out of the bracket altogether...in which case the rubber mount (and washers IIRC) need to stattle the u-shaped bracket and it gets adjusted by moving the two nuts (top and bottom) up or down simulaneously to adjust the tention.

I hope this makes sense and is of some assistance.

okay,,, I went out and found the adjusting bracket. I tightened it a lot until there wasn't any play. I tried again, and it's the same. Would tightening it even more do anything?

If that's not going to help, should I do what the haynes manual says about adjusting the clutch and do it from underneath via the inspection hole in the clutch bellhousing?

I fixed it!

Tightened the cable EVEN MORE until the length mentioned in the manual was reached. Drove it around the block, shifted fine up to 3rd. Now all I need to do is tune it up and fix the headlights, then she's a driver!
